  4. QUESTION:
what should I put in my graphic design portfolio?
I am a senior in college going for my BA in graphic design. I am mainly interested in web design, so my portfolio will be a website. I have figured that I need homepage, about me, contact, and a portfolio (example of my work). So far I haven't worked at any graphic design companies so I don't have any examples, just things I have done in school and at home for fun. What should I put in my portfolio page to show that I am experienced, even though I am just starting out? How can I get people to let me build a site for them?

    • ANSWER:
Let your website be your portfolio. Add a nice clean template with some JavaScript, CSS, and HTML obviously. Add some of your accomplishments and skills, hobbies and what not, create some graphics and put a contact address there. Here below is the link to my portfolio that I created for a class at college. Please feel free to grab anything there that you find useful.

  5. QUESTION:
Putting together a costume design portfolio for college visits?
I will be entering college in a year and am planning to study technical theater, specifically costume design. Many of the colleges I will be applying to have theater scholarships for both actors and techies, but they require an interview and a portfolio. I have a general idea of what to put into my portfolio - sketches, pictures, swatches of fabrics- and I have a lot of stuff that I could include, but I just don't know HOW to put it together. For example, what kind of binder or notebook should I buy? Should I glue the pictures to cardstock, or is there a better way to attach things that would let me update easily? Should I include lots of in-progress pictures or just the finished products? If I didn't sketch the costume before I made it, what do I do? How long should it be? Should I include blurbs about the design inspiration? Is it all right if I didn't take the photos myself? I have a ton of questions and any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
When putting together your portfolio it's best to do it so that all your work on a single costume is together, probably in sequence, so sketches and blurbs (short blurbs, 50 words or less), the swatches, then the finished photos. Use good quality scrapbooking type materials to glue your materials to the papers and put the sheets in protective plastic rather than hole punching it, so you can remove and replace as needed. It's fine if you didn't take the photo yourself, but if you didn't you need to put a caption on it "Photo by Name, Date". Use the most recent stuff, and don't make it too long, probably 10 pages or less.

  7. QUESTION:
Do I need to gain a formal qualification to get in to Graphic Design? is just a portfolio and experience ok?
I have a degree in Landscape Architecture where I studied design modules and learnt to use Photoshop, and I gained a skill in presentation and layout. I want to get into Graphic Design and I have created a portfolio of work using Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator to produce examples of brochure design, leaflets, posters, photography, advertising, marketing and corporate ID. I had a job for 12 months where half of my job was doing graphic design work using Coral draw. I am currently gaining experience (been doing it for 15 months now) as a Junior Graphic Designer at a Design company, but it’s occasional. I have done a course in Web design, so now I am capable of using Dreamweaver as well. Do I need to gain a formal qualification to get in to Graphic Design? or can I get in by having just having a portfolio and some work experience? Will employers ignore me because I have no formal qualification in GD?

    • ANSWER:
it sounds to me like you should have gotten a minor! jk...you have all the experience that VC majors learn...so i'd say you're fine as long as you have that portfolio. if you want a certificate, try the local Vocational school. it'll be basic stuff, but you do get some sort of reccomendation and certificate for it, adn it's a very short program. personally, it sounds to me that you have more than enough experience to work as a graphic desinger!!

  8. QUESTION:
What to include in a design portfolio for uni?
    any examples?

    • ANSWER:
For example, I have BA degree in Business Management , and in order to do MA Digital Animation and Visual Effects, the university asked for either a degree in Visual Effects or good portfolio. Since my degree is in business and VFX is my hobby, I sent my portfolio and it was a DVD along with my application... this DVD must has my name on it + the program name I am applying for.

What's inside that DVD? It has 3 commercials I made, each one starts playing with my name on it on the corner. Plus a PDF file that contains info about each commercial I made like when it was taken, and little brief description about the video. Then they accepted me !

See ! I knew all this because I asked the "Program Leader" NOT the admission officer .. because the decision of your portfolio will be made from the program leader or program officer. Ask that person what should be included in your portfolio for your particular program, he or she will tell you.

My advice ask them saying " what is expected in my portfolio ? " then explain to them that you can do many stuff but you want to know what they are excepting from applicants portfolios and what usual designs are expected or accepted...just ask them, you won't lose anything. This will help you alot.

      Good Luck

  10. QUESTION:
How should I prepare my graphic design portfolio for a job interview?
For example, should it be printed on 8 x 10 glossy and binded, or CD-ROM slide show, etc.
I need specifics: what kind of binder, paper stock, minimum amount of images, title page, I have no clue.

    • ANSWER:
There are entire college level classes on preparing and effective portfolio. However, I will offer a few sugestions.

I suggest a larger format than 8 x 10, but not too much larger. An art director's desk is very busy, and it can be very awkward for them to have to clear off enough space for someone's 18 x 24 inch portfolio case. I suggest something like a professional, leather(ish) 16 x 20 loose leaf case with MOUNTED examples, of equal size. All mounting boards should be of the same, neutral color, or, at least, color coordinated. A rainbow of different color mounting boards can distract from the art work.

Limit the hard copy images to about a dozen. Too many can be overwhelming to the director who just wants to see the quality of your work, and not an entire history of what you have done.

Only include the BEST of the Best examples. If you have ANY doubt about a piece, leave it out. Try to tailor the portfolio to the agency you are showing. If it is a fashion design shop, they are not going to be impressed by your illustrations of hot rods, or wizards, or ponies. They are going to want to see how you depict fabric and how it moves and drapes against a human figure. They will want to know what kind of color sense you have and what your favorite pallettes are.

Student works are fine, as long as they are of high quality and relatively recent.

Since it can be risky to leave a portfolio of your valuabe originals, bring along a CD rom of the same works, PLUS, under a separate file, some more examples that the director can review at her or his leisure. You can invite the director to keep the CD. Be sure to stick a label on the disc with your contact information. You may consider designing and printing a resume, listing, either, your work experience, or a list of highlighted projects you have done. Also be sure to include the tools of the trade you have mastered, such as media, softare apps and platforms you know.

  15. QUESTION:
I need to put a web design portfolio together and need anyones help?
well it doesn't matter if I make site for random company's, but if you could give me some example of company's and write a little brief for each site so I can make them and

who ever gives the best answer I will make a website for if you want

    • ANSWER:
Print up fliers (you can do that on your own computer - no need for Staples or Kinkos) offering a free website (design and development only) to local businesses that you think would benefit from a web presence. They pay for the domain name and hosting (they can buy or you can buy for them, but they do the financial deal with the host), you design, develop, upload the site and get it running. For free. In return for a tiny link down at the bottom to your site (or an email link to your email address). And you can use every site in your portfolio. Five to ten sites should be enough to get you started and unless you live in a small town, it should be easy to get that many business to go for free site design.

  17. QUESTION:
Artists and Art Schoolers in Design: Art Portfolio Content?
    Hello...again

I would like to ask those people who are currently in Art Schools, either teaching or as a student or has past experience.

For your portfolio to apply into Art School for Design...What did you draw or produce?

    Flowers?
    People?

Did you do Still Lifes and Observational drawings to try and get in for Design?
    What things did you draw?
    or even themes?

Additionally, did you need to write sort entries about the pieces you have done, explaining your inspiration and etc.?

Id appreciate any examples of what you had done for the pieces in the portfolio u had submitted, that reached the success of being accepted into Art School.

Most of the questions are vital in my understanding to this procedure of applying, thanks..again

    • ANSWER:
The art school that I went to gave very specific instructions for what they wanted in the portfolio. Check with the places you are going to apply to.
If they don't specify, I would pick a variety of subjects and techniques and mediums if possible, but would feature the work that I personally like the best.
Also, if the schools that you apply to aren't specific, you could find the requirements for other schools and follow that agenda.
I just copied this from an art school this minute (Ringling in Sarasota, FL) (This is for fine art, illutration etc)
Since representational drawing is an integral part of the curricula for the majors listed above, you should show examples of drawing from life in your portfolio. This may include interior or exterior environments, human figures, animals, hands and feet, and everyday objects. Portfolios may also include class assignments, design projects, animations, photography, paintings, sculpture, etc. Please do not copy directly from another artist, or include such things as anime, tattoo designs, dragons, unicorns, etc. At least half of your portfolio should consist of drawing from direct observation.

  19. QUESTION:
What are some reputable companies that I can pay to design a racing video game?
Send the links please. I am looking for some good companies with portfolios/examples I can search through to see if they might be able to design what I am looking for. I have a fairly wide open budget.

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
This is a tough question because some companies will just ripp-u-off. Do you want to develop the game in flah or using Java, C++ etc. Many variables to consider and do you already have an artist to develop this??? Well from experience I can tell you that developing a game might take months or even years but doing it with Flash for instance makes the whole process easier. I think you should put a post on craig's list and see a couple of portfolios before you pick any company. Picking a developer might be more cost effective than picking a company. I recall a couple of years ago when I was developing a peer-to-peer game for messenger that the contracting company was asking for a whole bunch of money just to develop the game and in fact I thought they where charging 10 times what any decent developer would ask. I feel sad when I see companies out there taking people's money. I have worked with a couple of gaming folks but they are way to expensive..... and will eat up anyone's budget. So I say post the project on craig's list, elance or any bidding site and you should get plenty of responses.

  20. QUESTION:
using photos for portfolio (graphic design)?
Ive asked this before but noone answered! I think I didn't ask it properly.
Okay so Im making a portfolio for college so I can study Graphic Design.
I asked if I could use Celebrity photos (that I have changed, added, design, blended etc) for my portfolio.

    Anyone know?
    For example; http://i38.tinypic.com/2iu74g5.png
I didn't make this, but if I made someting along these lines would it be okay to use for my portfolio or should the photography be your own? (even though Im not studying Photography)

    • ANSWER:
First, here is the link to a site that will give you the correct information regarding the use of copyrighted materials. If you plan to continue your studies in Design, you really need to know what the copyright laws actually say, and not depend on other people answering this kind of question for you. The answers you get on YA have just as much chance of being wrong as they do of being right.

      http://www.copyright.gov

My take on your question is that the use of celebrity photos for your entry portfolio to get into college is perfectly acceptable, as it falls into the "Fair Use" doctrine of copyright law. That is, that it is LEGALLLY acceptable. The question remains as to whether these images are appropriate for the purposes of the portfolio. A good portfolio should only include the BEST of your best work. If your finished image is more the work of the photographer, and less about what you did to it, then it really doesn't reflect you skills and talent. In other words, it does not belong in a portfolio of your work. Running a couple of Photoshop filters through a photo does not showcase your skill and talent as a graphic designer, any more that opening a can of mushroom soup shows off your talent as a cook. You might be able to prepare a delicious meal, but Campbells deserves some of the credit.

To make it clear that the portfolio pieces are YOUR work and not the shared efforts of some kind of collaboration, the images SHOULD be using your own photos. If you are trying to show off YOUR Photoshop skills, then it doesn't matter if the images are of celebrities, or members of your own family. Don't "dilute" the impact of a portfolio by beginning your work with someone else's image.

  21. QUESTION:
    Graphic design portfolio? (Help)?
I am a teen interested in Graphic Design (logos, magazine spreads, typography ect..).
I would like to work on some projects to help develop my skills and get some work done for a portfolio.

I have Adobe Photoshop and soon will have Adobe InDesign. The problem is I don't know where to get specification for project from (briefs). For example.. If I were to create a magazine spread what subject would I do it on?

I cannot freelance on the Internet as I don't have a bank account and am not that advanced yet + I have school.

An after school class is also out of the question as there is none available on the Island I live on.

    • ANSWER:
You can base your projects on anything. You could do a magazine about your favorite hobby. Just remember, when you get a job as a Graphic Designer you won't get to pick the topic. I know when I applied to colleges, a lot of them wanted traditional art as well as digital; so you might want to make sure you have some of that. If your more comfortable with digital art you could have that be the majority of your portfolio. Also, don't put too much in your portfolio, probably 20 pieces max. You can also check out highschoolportfolios.com (I think that's the correct address) and look at other students portfolios.

  22. QUESTION:
Can I present designs in my portfolio that I've worked to create even if I'm not the original designer?
I have been part of a theater program for four years now, and while there has always been one or two main set designers (I've been the designer on occasion), everyone in the technical department works the actual creation of sets, props, and things like that. I'm applying to a theater program at my college, and I have to present a portfolio of my work. Besides including my own original set designs and pictures, am I allowed to include pictures of the sets I've worked on, even if I didn't create the original design? Can I list those shows on my resume, as long as I designate that I was part of the scenic construction and not design? I would make a note of the fact that I am not the original designer; the pictures would be more like examples of the things I worked on within in my program and what I am capable of producing.

    • ANSWER:
It is absolutely fine to do so. Though I'm in costumes, I have many pictures and sketches of my designer's work. The important thing is to make clear lables of things in your portfolio. Make sure on the lables, that you have the production name, place/company, the designer and the part you played.

You're also fortunate that you've probably got an interview situation where you can explain perfectly clearly what your role was. Also if you have any photos of your process or detail shots of whatever you worked on, research you worked from or anything else that can support the piece, make sure you include that as well.

AND (I'm almost done here), make sure to include your designs as well and with said designs, put sketches and research examples as well as finished productions. Include class projects as well. Showing how you think and approach things is easily as important in showing contruction skills.

A good general rule is to gear your portfolio to whatever you're applying for, be it school or a job. If you're going for design or tech, lead with that, but include an array of work.

      Good luck.

  23. QUESTION:
I'm thinking of doing AS level Art & Design @ my local college - do I need to show them a portfolio of work?
I've tried to get on adult and evening courses to start off but wasn't able to do the courses on those particular days - how well do you need to be able to paint and draw for the AS level ? I am quite good bit worry whether they will need to see my work & what sorts of examples will they need to see in a portfolio ? .

    • ANSWER:
It would be a good idea. although at that level you wouldn't be expected to have that much work. But as with any other art course. You know the old saying 'a picture paints a thousand words' So a good portfolio will show them exactly what your capable off.

make sure its a good varied portfolio. not all the same kind of work. put as much variety in as you can. photos are ok if you have lots of sculpture or ceramics.

A portfolio also shows them a genuine interest in art & Design. as many people take art mistakenly thinking its an easy option to get a qualification.

  24. QUESTION:
I need to build my portfolio. Does anyone need a cheap website?
I haven't been getting any clients when my skills are evident in my websites design but its all because I have no examples in my portfolio. Does any small business need a website?
    www.UnixCommerce.com

    • ANSWER:
Hey mate. The best thing to do when you start is to make a company, let's say 'The Example Company' and build some designs around it with color variances and placing of the same images around. Get a couple of those going and then put them in the Portfolio section but knock them up with real clients after some time. Just link them up on your server somewhere where the client can have a good look at the same thing just looking different.

At present all your clients are seeing is this design you have for your company. That is not going to convince anyone or give them additional ideas to what they already had, that will make you some extra bucks at the end, you get what I mean?

Get one of those 'instant reply' goodies on your email account. if you cant read it right away the potential client will receive a notice that someone in the office will attend to their question as soon as possible. Not a big deal but good client relations - the clients like IT people that is reliable and contactable [that responds to their needs].

[Correct the grammar on your 'Free offer' deal with the b/cards - does not read right.]

    Graphic Design College Portfolio Help?
I have a portfolio interview in a few weeks and I must have a 50-100 words for each sample that best reflects my creative talent. I understand what this is saying, But i don't understand how I'm even suppose to begin! I'm not much of an english major... so does any body have some advice/examples/ANYTHING that could possibly give me a clue on how to start?
(I know this isn't a very specific question, but anything helps!)

    • ANSWER:
There's a few good sites that have some great tips on preparing. If you're like myself and a lot of other people and have a hard time describing yourself and your talents in a short, clear, concise manner, look to a friend who IS an English major or a good writer to give you a hand. You know what you're good at - if you make a list of your key talents, someone who is good at writing and already knows you can likely help you at least get started.

Here's some links that might help you. You'll notice that some tips are the same on different sites, but some have good suggestions that aren't on others. Take the best suggestions and run with it.

If it's just a portfolio interview for a GD class, those should help you out. However, if it's both a job interview along with showing your portfolio, so you need to balance each for the best presentation. As far as Resume's go, if you don't have a lot of experience, don't embellish it with non-relevant, unimportant filler material. Educational background, yes. Work experience that is relevant to the job, yes. Anything important you've done that's important to the job, yes. Awards and recognition, no - unless it was an industry award or recognition, putting "I did's (I did this, I did that), makes you come across as a "me" person, and not a team player, which is what companies are looking for.

Don't forget to thoroughly research the company as well; one of the first questions most employers ask (I used to), is "Why do you want to work here?" Most applicants don't bother to consider anything else but the prospective job and paycheck that goes along with it. If you don't even know about the company, what it does, its accomplishments, etc., then why would you want to work there? Of course, if it's just a job and money, learn as much as you can and fake your way through it. Just don't BS it too much - interviewers aren't stupid, and they'll know if you're just reading from the company website description.

Never discuss money unless the interviewer brings it up. You should already have researched potential similar jobs and know what the going rate is. It's important to understand that Human Resources for companies already know what type of individual they're looking for, and how much they're willing to pay a person to do it. Don't overprice yourself out of a job, but don't sell yourself short either. Know what your skills are worth, and how much you're willing to pay. The result if you take less than you're worth is that they'll think you're willing to do more for less, and in the end, it's how most people get frustrated and leave.

Know what you want to get out of the job (besides the job, money, benefits, etc.). Have specific goals in mind to accomplish if you get the job so you can tell the interviewer if asked.

      Good luck to you.

  27. QUESTION:
Graphic Design & Multimedia portfolio building?
I've been trying to get on to a BA GD or multimedia degree but as I didn't take the traditional foundation art course I've been struggling to put together a good portfolio. My question is is there in the uk somewhere where I can take a short course 1 year to help me build a good portfolio or on line that won't cost more than £500? I can't afford to retake another BTEC or foundation course as I already did and I feel its too late to change my course of study for something I really want a career in. Any links as to how to create a good onlin portfolio to show both print and digital media, with student examples and how to lay out my work, would really help.I've been through 4 interviews and haven't had any offers so I'm clearly doing something wrong. Please help as I'm considering throwing in the towel!! thank you

    • ANSWER:
I really think you need to bite the bullet and complete your foundation course. The reason Art Schools draw upon foundation courses for their student intake is because foundation courses produce the sort of students they want.

There are certain core skills like drawing that you will learn on foundation that will be considered vital when it comes to applying for a degree course regardless of the particular subject. If you haven't mastered some of these basic skills then you will struggle, however, nicely you present your portfolio.

Ok if you are determined to avoid foundation what they are looking for is mastery of some key skills like drawing, composition and an understanding of colour. They will not necessarily be looking for polished, finished items as much as they will be looking to see that you have a sharp mind that is able to solve problems creatively.

  28. QUESTION:
What is included in a portfolio for an architecture school?
What exactly ought to be included when submitting a portfolio to an architecture program? Any specific examples of what they mean by “evidence of design or creative work?” What are some dos and don'ts when submitting or compiling a portfolio for submissions?

    • ANSWER:
no technical drawings - they are mostly interested in your ability to sketch and your visual sense - like the layouts of the pages are pretty important. graphic design is also good. evidence of design or creative work is anything that you took and added a a bit of your own too - example: an edited photograph or drawing something that doesn't really exist. they want to know that you can think outside of the box.

dos: pay attention to the page layout and make a visually balanced presentation, include artwork in as many different medias as possible, try to show things that are interesting or creative, make sure you have a few examples of drawings that show space
      dont: include technical drawings

      hope it helped :)

  31. QUESTION:
Should I go to college for Graphic Design? (Examples/pictures included)?
I like to design things using Photoshop and other image manipulation programs, and I'm thinking about going to college for it, but I don't know if I'm good enough; especially with colleges requiring portfolios. Can I get some opinions on some of the things I've made?

This was for a project in my Digital Art class. We had to create a yearbook cover.

Also for that class. We had to create a CD cover.(I was working with restrictions)
    Front: http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk216/Kaitlyn31893/cdcover2.png?t=1275690748
    Back: http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk216/Kaitlyn31893/cdback2.png?t=1275690817

Also for the class. This picture started out as a white flower with a black background.

I made this when I first started learning how to use Photoshop. It was made with filmstrip brushes and the birds were made with a heart shaped brush...haha
    city

For Digital Art. We had to make a collage with our own pictures. Nevermind our goofiness.

This was for a friend's grandma who passed away.
    http://i45.tinypic.com/50qsz9.jpg

And this was a layout I made for that friend's sister.
    http://i49.tinypic.com/29fqpna.jpg

I've done more, and unfortunatly, one I liked a lot I wasn't able to include... so, do you think with some more practice I could make a good Graphic Designer? I don't want to waste my time if I'm not..
Oh, in the CD cover it was supposed to be like that. It was supposed to be like I cut it out of a magazine or something and taped it on. I actually spent a lot of time on the edges of it. I guess I didn't do it right because a lot of people don't see it. haha!

    • ANSWER:
absolutely, if you have a dream, follow it, so why not go to college for it, if you like it, that's all that matters, my favorite design of yours was the yearbook cover, but I don't like the idea of having a quote on the cover, I think quotes are more suited for the inside of the book.

  32. QUESTION:
how can i find people that need design work done?

    any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Hi there, I suggest Elance, offer the lowest bids and throw a free design in there too.

also to start building your portfolio, try twitter, facebook etc and offer FREE logo's or free design jobs for promo and portfolio building, sucks at first but later it pays of.

  33. QUESTION:
Portfolio question for BA Graphic Design admission?
As mentioned in the question, I have applied for a BA in Graphic Design and have received answers in which I am asked for a portfolio on a CD.

Some of the universities have some specific requirements, such as creating a Powerpoint slide show. Do any of you know any link to an example of a powerpoint portfolio presentation? I have searched for some, but have only found professional looking portfolios on websites.

    For example:
"Please include a written commentary about your folio." Should that be written inside the powerpoint presentation or in a word document?

    • ANSWER:
You're going to be hard pressed to find a powerpoint portfolio online anywhere. Mainly because nobody uses them to show their works on the internet. The internet itself already lets you do that.

Don't sweat the powerpoint. It's just one portfolio piece per slide with a small description. Things like the title of it, when you did it, what you did it for, and maybe what you like the most about it. They aren't expecting you to wow them with your powerpoint skills. Powerpoint just isn't meant for dynamic motion graphics presentation, and they know that. The reason they even want a powerpoint at all is because it's a universal program that almost everyone has which can easily be implemented into a presentation. After all, that's what is gonna be happening. Your portfolio powerpoint is gonna go up on a big screen along with a bunch of other applicants and they're gonna flip through the slideshows together in order to narrow the applicant list.

I had to do something similar for college. So an example of a slide for what I gave the college back when I applied would be a slide had an illustration on it, and a caption underneath read:
      "Atticus Flinch" (May 2000)
Advanced Studio Illustration Class / Stillwater Highscool
"I like this piece mainly for the wide contrast and tonal range which gives it a crisp impact."

If you don't know what to say about it, ask someone else what they like about it, or make something up. The three tips I can give you about making a powerpoint portfolio are these:

      1. Don't bother with the fancy animated slide transitions. They're cheesy, overused and will ultimately be distracting them while they flip through the slideshow.

      2. What you can read on your computer screen from a foot away isn't what somebody else is gonna be able to read on a projector screen from 20 feet away. Make sure you use an adequate sized font on your slides.

      3. Keep it simple. Don't try to over-design your slides. It's about your work, not the slideshow itself. It may be tempting to try to flood the show with flashy graphics, especially when design professors will be looking at it, but trust me, they'll give you credit and appreciate that you know how to keep things simple and highlight what's important.

      Hope that helps.

      Hope that helps.

  34. QUESTION:
Portfolio to apply for a Graphic Design course?
I'm currently a college student taking a 1 year arts & design program to help me figure out what I would like to strictly focus on studying, Ive made up my mind and have applied to several schools for Graphic Design for september 2010. All the colleges require a portfolio with 10-15 of my best work

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND I PUT IN IT OR START CREATING? I need to startsoon, the portfolio is due in 2 months. help please, any suggestions or examples would be greatly appreciated.
I used to focus strictly on canvas and ink painting, but I really have a passion and interest for graphic design now.

Besides having some kind of logo design /photoshop work Is it acceptable to include still life pencil drawings, 1,2,3 point perspective sketches and abstract art work?

    • ANSWER:
Logos of made up companies, corporate suites (letter heads, envelopes, business cards), package designs (cd's), menus, drawings and sketches that shows a range of style. The site below is of a graphic design portfolio website.

  35. QUESTION:
Help with starting a portfolio website please?
Hi, I am completely new to the process of making a portfolio website and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.

What would you suggest to get started, what do you consider the most important aspects of a advertising/design portfolio, any tips on who to use for hosting and domain registering that you have worked with and it has worked well for you?

I think I have some ideas for the domain name and I checked to see it they were taken already and found one that is not currently in use. I'd love any suggestions for a domain name you'd like to share though.

For some background, this site is for a portfolio to get into an undergrad advertising program at FSU. It will have mostly graphic design, 2d/3d animation examples, tutorials, and whatever else I can come up with to add. I've seen some of their students final portfolios and normally they include these in one way or another: a 15-30 second video advertisement, about 10-15 print advertisements, and a written form of their work(a powerpoint, a written paper for an advertising promotion, something like that the reader can download). Although, those were for their graduates, not the applicants, so I really do not think they are looking for advertisements since that is what they are teaching in the program. My guess it they are looking more for "potential" to create those things in a portfolio. The program is extremely competitive though so any tips you could offer that could make it a little better would be really appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

    • ANSWER:
You have asked many questions that are touch to answer. But I'll give a try -

Search for "best portfolio websites" on the internet. You will get lots of portfolio sites and it will give you a good learning and starting point.

Domain name - Go for something short and sweet, something that people can remember and spell easily. Don't go for longer than 12 characters unless they convey a really great meaning.

Hosting - Go with a reputable hosting provider. If you are new to hosting and stuff, go with bigger players like hostgator etc that provide good support. Don't go for cheaper hosting.

  37. QUESTION:
What's the best way to do a graphic design resume?
I am applying for a new job in the graphic design field. Is it best to do a 'design piece' for my resume to show creativity, or just a plain white professional/standard resume? In college i was taught to keep it professional, but yet show creativity, so that is what i am leaning towards, but when i look at examples online, they all show black & white. I am going to export a PDF, & put one or two pages of portfolio work at the end aslo.

    • ANSWER:
depends on if you have experience as a graphic designer or not. if recentlly out of school there is not much one can include except class submitted work and/or work you've done on your own. that's great if you have a working portfolio even if a small one and you can always ask if they'd like to see it in addition to a traditional resume. if you've been working as a graphic arts professional already then you should pick the best of the best and do just as you said - include in pdf towards end of resume - assuming you're submitting it online.
obviously whatever you turn in should have some original creative thought behind it, especially due to the industry.
but do not try and over do it b/c it's always best to say more with less and a graphic design position will be more about what you can do software/creative/initiative wise than what one has done in the past.
also depends on if one wants to work in an agency setting, or in a production setting (not very creative sometimes) or in house for a company that will rely on you to do more than just graphic design work.
good luck and feel free to shoot me a copy of it.

  38. QUESTION:
Question about beginning a job in graphic design?
I'm currently 17 and I'm still in highschool. I know a lot about CSS and HTML, I practically live on the computer and have been playing around with coding and designing as a hobby for years now. I grew up using freewebs and other free hosting sites, and I am also pretty much 100% photoshop literate.
I see job openings all the time where I'm from, saying that they are seeking inexperienced junior level developers to assist with client projects. They say that the requirements are just some HTML/CSS skills, and an overall idea of how to create and modify graphics and images in PhotoShop. I have always wanted to consider these types of jobs, but I'm always worried about that they will expect of me? I don't know much about scripts, and I have only really created fun blogging type websites for me and my friend's personal use, so what will I be asked to do in these kind of jobs? What will they expect of me?
Also when it comes to designing a portfolio, or showing examples, does anyone know of some websites proving tips and such? Thanks !

    • ANSWER:
I will try to answer your question. First of all beside my degree in computer i have a degree in Human Resources and may know a little bit how Employer wants from the employee.

What all the Employer want to know is you have the education and the skills to do the JOB.
What do they mean with education? It is not always a degree, if you can prove that you have read some books on the subject they MAY BE accept that as education. At school it is not from a book you learn???
Conclusion: If you don't have a degree, at least have read and know about the subject.

As it comes to skill you have to prove that the knowledge you have you can practice it. In your case I will create several website to demonstrate your talent in design website for personal activity as well for corporate.

When you are writing your application letter try to convince them that you have the knowledge and the skills, and that you are willing to prove it if they let you work for them. Aside make it cleared you are willing and or are trying to have a degree in what you are doing.

Make a good resume. make sure you fill all project you have participate in if you don,t work experience.

And my last advise take what they offer you; start small and grow big.

  39. QUESTION:
Best way to put up a portfolio? Flash... Rollover... Thumbnail...?
I am putting up my graphic design and illustration portfolio. What format do people like to look at? Any good examples out there?

    • ANSWER:
I'd definitely say thumbnail. It's simple and easier to look at, making it more accessible to the most amount of people. over complicating things isn't always good. A *short* flash intro giving way to a menu to different parts of your portfolio is pretty nifty way to spiff it up without going over the top. rollovers just turn me off of a portfolio for some reason. Plus not everyone computer has flash or is fast enough to be able to view that type of thing. You ultimately want the focus to be on the pieces in your portfolio anyway, not on the portfolio "holding" the work. That's my feeling anyway.
this guy's portfolio is pretty sweet: http://www.okaydave.com/
it's got the short flash intro and the easy to navigate menu plus little movie clips about some individual more in-depth projects he's done.
      hope it helps!

  44. QUESTION:
Applying for graphic design course, need to provide examples of my work?
What sort of work are they looking for? I only really have experience in Photoshop (and basic knowledge of animation, 3D sculpting etc type programs), it's all self taught and I learn quickly, but I don't have a portfolio and they stuff I've created has just been bits and pieces for friends, nothing I could probably use for legal reasons as I don't have permission to use some of the pictures... any helpful advice from those who've been in the same situation (applying for design school) would be really helpful.

While I think the stuff I've done is good, it's nothing I would personally use when applying for design school.

    • ANSWER:
i know what you mean. what i did, was just put all the work that you HAVE worked on, in your big portfolio, and since you have no experience, you may want to read a little basic knowledge on what you think your work COULD represent in the world of art, so that when you go in there, and they observe your work, you can sound knowledgeful of the concepts you think is represented in that piece. If you will not be in the room with them, then on the back of your work, make sure to give a brief decscription of the representation of the piece. example: Implied line, utilizing your positive and negative space. Example: charcoal drawing example: skewed perspective example: two point perspective example: experimenting with the simultaneous contrast of ..... colors. They just want to see where you are in terms of motivation, skills, and understanding of concept. good luck

  46. QUESTION:
I need to make a portfolio to apply for my minor in computation arts?
Most of my stuff is pretty quirky, but I do have some higher class looking stuff...
Should i make the portfolio look 100% professional, or should i show off my quirky side while designing it?
(For example, professional would be mainly black with clean lines and stuff, or quirky would just be...i dunno, different...i think I'm pretty creative)
Its a university program, and only 40 people get accepted per year in minor and major combined.....what should i do?
I'm thinking slightly on the quirky side so it seems more original

    • ANSWER:
I don't really have any experience in this area but from your description this program sounds rather prestigious. I believe if you'd go with the more professional presentation they'd take you more seriously. Your work should stand out on it's own just fine that way.

      Good luck!

  47. QUESTION:
I need some ideas for a website design. Can anybody help me?
I am designing a website for my college portfolio and I am looking for some ideas for designs that I can create / modify. I am fresh out of ideas, apart from one that looks something like a fashion models portfolio.

My portfolio will be on the internet, and I would like something quite catchy. It has to be similar to my personal style, and I don't mind using my photo if it fits, but I would prefer not to. I don't want to use any pre-made templates, otherwise it's not my work.

My style is a mix between rock, punk, r'n'b and pop. Kind of an urban "skater boy", if you like. I would put screen shots of some of the things I have done to illustrate my work (so spaces for these would be really good), and possible put live examples of some of the work, server space permitting.

If you can give me some basic ideas to go off, it would be pretty good. Whether or not you want it, you will be credited with the idea, because it is still your idea, not mine.
A bit more info, if you need it:

I'm going to be using Dreamweaver and Photoshop for the basic page. I can use Flash, if you have anything that needs it, or looks better in it. Any help you can give me would be really appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
you can download some free design templates from the web and then you can modify it and create your own website using dreamweaver,
Just type in free design templates in google and you'll get thousands of free choices.

    • ANSWER:
An Associates would be better since you Bachelors degree has little if anything to do with graphic design./

  49. QUESTION:
    Design Accountant job interview help?
HI Im in need of some urgent advice!

I have a job interview this week at a design company for a job role as a project/account handler.

The interview is going to be at a restaurant/bar for some reason, I have a design portfolio but Im wondering should i take this with me as the jobs title isn't a graphic designer. I don't want the interviewer to think I would prefer a design role more but at the same time the company isnt very big so i dont know if the interviewer is looking for an all rounder.

my portfolio is A2 so its a bit big to carry around, the only other idea I had was to take my laptop with examples of my work, but at the same time the interviewer already has a pdf of my work.

    what should i do!!??

    Thanks for your help!!

    • ANSWER:
I've gone on job interviews where they have seen a PDF of my work prior to the interview, but then they ask to see it again in person. Employers want to see your work printed out and they want to hear you talk about your process.

If your portfolio is too big to carry around I would definitely recommend bringing your laptop instead, but only pull your laptop out if asked. Even though the job you're going for isn't as a Graphic Designer, it's better to be safe then sorry.

      Good luck!
