   I have used finalcrit.com, and I was pleased with the layout and professionalism of it, however, it goes soooo slow! I tried to show my dad and when we typed my name in, it took almost ten minutes to load.

      Free galleries usually have to cover their costs somehow, usually by adverts which you probably want to avoid. I assume you don't want to use Flickr or similar sites. For a relatively small cost your own domain and website would be ideal and needn't cost too much - look at domain name ads in computer mags. This would also give you a pro email address which helps tell people you are genuine. For a free site try the studio area of the Saatchi site which might suit your requirements.       You could start your own group in Yahoo Groups where there's plenty of space to upload your pix. Cheapest way of all would be to find a friend with their own website and persuade them to let you have a sub-folder on it - nearly as good as having your own site.

      If you're after something that little bit more professional i would suggest paying for one. 4ormat do absolutely stunning websites for something like .99 a month.

      Flickr's great but it's used by everyone, from teenagers to amateur enthusiasts. If you want your work to be taken seriously, i'd stay away. Tumblr could also be a good one. You get to personalise it a lot more than you would flickr. Or as the other poster suggested something like blogger.

      However, if it's purely from an enthusiast point of view and you're not looking to show it to any possible employers, go with flickr.

      I don't know what else to say. There are other web sites but the best advice is if you want to draw realistic then draw realistic -- oh, everyone's proportions are their own. So use the proportions at the Figure Drawing Lab as GUIDES, NOT as RULES.

      Portfolios should be designed for specific audiences.

      So let's say you are building a portfolio for wedding clients ... soon to be married couples for example. You won't include grungy street art pics, or insect macro shots, the client will have little to no interest in that. they'll want portraits, groups shots, perhaps event shots and preferable wedding pictures.

      So think about the types of clients you are going to approach and ask yourself, what will they WANT to see.

      As for Free sites ... try http://www.wix.com/ but you should really invest a bit of money and get a domain name and some proper hosting.

    Ive just dropped out of university in my first year and I am convinced if I can get my foot in the door I will make good graphic designer. The only problem is I don't have any actual work for clients.       work for friends, make up projects, half my portfolio are mock-ups and school work. You need a lot of examples of various styles to show somebody, or they won't really hire you. I have used a few local sites, there should be some sort of local job hunting forum somewhere online, I can't really help you with that, I don't know where you are. Also arts & entertainment mags that are local are a good place to put an advert up. Make a website, and try to just keep working, that is all you can do.

      You can also approach non-profit charities, I have had mixed luck with them.

      First, I would recommend branching out to other domains then .com. Plenty of well paid web designers got their start working with schools and charities (.edu and .org) Nothing wrong with that work.

      Next, are there any local businesses that you frequent that do not have a web site. Trade your services for something that you want. That vintage clothing shop you like, may just want to start up a page. Same for the coffee shop, how much web designing will you do for a card?. How about a local band, or artist.

      Finally, get your own web site, and fill it with the stuff you like. It does not have to be about your business, it has to be something that will catch the eye, and let people know that you can do good web design. Do not be afraid to set up a web page the is all about your favorite band, or about an author that you like. If it is designed well, people will notice, even if they think you have lousy taste in music.'

      Best of luck, and remember, there is no better way to get exposure then to expose yourself (err... well, not like that. You know what I mean.)

      pbase.com allows you to have pics on for free. I pay for my account which is a whopping 23 bucks a year for 500M. Its totally worth it to me. photobucket.com is free too. I know that both those sites allow you to have pics up but I don't know all the limitations.

    I'm an artist and I want to know if there are any good websites for artists. I have many examples of my work in the form of jpeg pictures, and I would like to display them artistically, if possible. I would also like to be able to sell the art online through the website. I would prefer a free site over a paid one, but if there is a good website at a low price I would take it into consideration. I have a myspace account and if anybody has any interesting ideas of how to display my art that would also be very helpful.       You may want to try www.deviantart.com. It's a well-maintained site, where thousands of people go to post their art. However, there are younger people on the site, and they are sometimes immature, but there's a feature where one can block bad or immature comments. I use my deviantart page to post drawings and communicate with other artists, and artistic friends. There are also forums and chats you can use to communicate with other artists.

      At first glance, deviantart may look as if it caters to anime/manga art, but there are thousands more people who create artwork in other mediums, such as traditional, photography, food art, etc. It's a community for every kind of artist. (With the exception of pornography and the like.)

      You also have the option to watch other artists, and be informed whenever they post a new piece of artwork. You can also write journals and customize them using CSS.

      Deviantart may be a little confusing to work at first, but in time, you'll learn all the tricks of the trade.

    I can't seem to find a way to add text into the Deviantart's portfolio though. I know you can submit pieces of writing as regular pieces of art onto the website...but not for the Portfolio. When I try, it says "Illegal filetype"

      On deviantart you can definitely post writing. I have before but it's mostly just fanfiction under where you post art work you have the option to post text and you can just copy and past your writing on there.

    How do I create a digital Teaching Portfolio?
    Hello,

    I recently graduated from (supposedly) a top education school, but my program appears to have been very behind technologically. A few friends of mine from other education schools have created digital portfolios through their programs, and I think is a great idea, far better than the cumbersome hard copy portfolios I had to make through my program. I'd like to transpose the hard copy portfolio I made into a far more accessible (and visually appealing!) digital version.

    My questions are:
    - Are there websites that are not affiliated with education graduate schools that offer a digital portfolio hosting service?
    - Are there any websites not affiliated with graduate schools that provide a digital portfolio creation service (like a template)?

      You don't need a digital portfolio hosting service. You can blog about your experience and works. There are a lot of free blogging platforms out there including WordPress & Blogger. The good thing about blogging is it will not only feature your portfolio but also your real-life and updated experiences.

    What is a good free photo sharing website that looks somewhat professional?
    I am trying to build an online portfolio, but I can't afford to pay for a website yet. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good free websites where I can display my photography, but doesn't look bad or have ads. I want to come across as professionals as I can (and being I am just out of college, I assume people will be understanding about it being a free website).       Flickr.com is a good choice for something simple. For something with a little bit more flair, try www.wix.com. Wix offers free flash templates to which you add your own content. If you're doing any portraiture work and you want your site guests to be able to order prints directly from your website shutterfly.com has a decent share site that you can make look professional with minimal effort.

      Hands down for customizing, professionalism, and aesthetic appeal Wix is the way to go. However to really customize it the way you want, it will take a little bit of elbow grease. They offer tutorial videos as well to help you along.

    Free Videographer at your wedding?
    if i said i would film your wedding absolutely free, spend as long as it takes to get it edited right (about a week or 2 at best) and you got few dvd's with professional quality out of it would you be up for it? The whole point of it being free is to build up a portfolio so can be used for websites to show potential customers what they will be getting.

      actually i would bae my decision on a few things - we would have to meet and i would need to get a 'sense' of who you are - do i feel comfortable around you, do i like you as a person - a wedding is the most important day in your life so you want to be comfortable with the person.

      I would also like to see some of your previous work - to gauge quality and make sure you weren't some random stalker type..

      Do you have videos of events you have already done? If not, then i would suggest you get some. weddings are so imporant that someone might not want to take the risk with someone inexperienced. do friends/family weddings and do's.

      why not do videos of birthdays and other parties so that you can practice and build up a portfolio of sorts there, that way you technique, skills and quality will be there for people to see.

      but hey, its still an amazing offer - and for free, yaay I'd love it!!

    Steps for a young adult planning on investing?
    Hey guys, I'm 19 years old and am planning on investing ,000 into the stock market. The hardest part about this is: Where do I begin? Are there any sites where I can open a portfolio free of charge or with a small fee, such as e-trade? Are there any websites that I can use as a step-by-step guide till I collect some dividends?       I would not invest via the internet at this point.

      You have to educate yourself.

      You are 19. It's entirely possible that at some point in time you may need some of this money. There are more "liquid" investments than stocks, as they are typically for the long term.

      There are different instruments like mutual funds or CD's that might possibly be better for you at this time.

      What you need to do is get "face to face" with an investment planner, and not necessarily a stock broker. This person can give you a sort of "Investing 101" and point you in the direction of what the best instruments would be for you.

      We all hear stories about people who invest 00 in the stock market, and in 6 months have a portfolio worth ,000. What you aren't told is that for every one person that does that, there are thousands that invest their 00 and in six months have 100.

    Where is a free or low cost website that offers flash websites for designer?
    I am a Graphic Artist and here is my situation. I want a flash website up as my portfolio. I already have my domain and hosting. I am trying to find a website that will basically make my site for me or have a template to use. You give them your art and they can put it into the template. I am not just looking for a site with templates because I don't know how to work flash to edit it. I hope this make sense. Do you know of any site like this? Does it exist?
    Wix i tried but they want you to use their hosting and they have ads all over the place. Webbly wants you to use their hosting even though you can use your own. But I cant find any Flash sites they offer. Just regular HTML.

      Once you have made your flash site ( not recommended ), you can use the code, graphics and supporting files on any hosting site. I believe Wix.com gives you a chance to download the flash file if you want.

      Even flash sites must use HTML and CSS to allow browsers to know what to do in parsing the page. You need to learn it. If you want to make a flash photo gallery, JAlbum is FREE and has many skins to use. Lots of photographers use it.
