Google Portfolio

Rick Munarriz, Popular Investments advisor from the Motley Fool thinks Google stocks and Gold are the two most popular investments in this age and time. Based on the above facts, a question can be posed: Between a share in Google and 1 once of Gold which is a better investment. As at 4th January 2008, investing in gold was profitable than investing in Google stocks, with 1 once of gold selling at $ 859.19 while I share of Google selling at $657 in the U.S stock market.

Comparisons between investments in precious metals and investments in financial instruments like stock are always a subject of debate in the financial world. In this decade particularly stocks have shown impressive performances in the various stock exchange markets in the world from the FTSE to the Dow Jones. The skyrocketing prices of stocks can be attributed to stable political environment in U.S.A, U.K and other developed countries. In the last seventy years there has been no war or a major political crisis in the major players in the global economy. The legal structures and the financial infrastructure in the developed world over the last seventy years have improved dramatically facilitating the smooth flow of trade in stock exchanges across the world. With all these factors about stocks noted, it still cannot be concluded that stocks are better than gold.

The year was 2008 and the world financial system was greeted by the rudest shock it has ever had. In a span of less than 24 hours, over 5 major stock exchange markets crashed leaving investors with losses running in billions of dollars. In that instance it was very clear that financial markets are the most vulnerable of markets in the world. It was immediately appreciated that the stability and certainty associated with investing in gold cannot be found in investments in stocks and bonds. Stocks are primarily short term investments. The person who buys stocks with the intention of selling them within a short period of time is bound to benefit more than the person who buys stocks for long run intentions. However when it comes to gold, gold is ideal for the investor with short term motives as well as the investor with long run motives. When the market is bullish gold can be purchased and sold at a massive price when the market becomes bearish. In the long run, the prices of gold are stable swinging in the range of $700- $1200 for 1 once of gold.

For the small scale investor, investing in gold entails purchasing gold coins or gold bars. The small scale investor can also own gold bank accounts or purchase gold exchange traded funds. Gold exchange traded funds are usually sold and traded in the major stock exchanges in the world. Large scale investors like commercial banks and central banks also keep more than 20% of their reserves in gold.

Investing in gold is the only way to store wealth over the long run without depreciation in the value of the wealth. Gold is also a profitable tool of investment in the short run.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Google Finance Portfolio as a Stock Simulation Game?
Can one use the portfolio part of the Google Finance as a virtual stock trading game, to learn more about investment? If not, what features are lacking, and what is a good substitute?

    • ANSWER:
Sure you could use it that way if you and some buddies just set up portfolios and tracked who did better. The things missing are commissions and taxes. Also everyone has to be totally honest really the main thing missing is that since its not real money you won't act the same way (ie it pays to take huge risks figuring I'll either win it all or lose everything but its worth the chance - in real life you'd be alot more conservative).

  2. QUESTION:
How can I download a spreadsheet into Excel from a Google portfolio?

    • ANSWER:
Okay, log into your Google Portfolio. I just did, and there is a link at the top that says "Download to spreadsheet". Click on that, and you will save your portfolio as a .csv file, which stands for "Comma Seperated Values" and any spreadsheet can handle this type of data, even if your spreadsheet is still running on your PC jr.

Okay, then let's import that csv into excel. Open up Excel, and then find the import... command in the menus. This will let you import that csv file. I don't have excel installed anymore on my machine, so I can't help you with those details, but you can look that up on the excel help file if need be.

      Good luck.

  3. QUESTION:
Is it possible to use google portfolio for tracking bonds and mutual funds?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, but...

You have to enter all the data in manually, because it doesn't automatically keep track of when dividends are paid, or, in the event you are tracking a 401[k], doesn't compute for dollar-cost averaging when your dividends are reinvested in your mutual funds. For stocks, it does a fine job of tracking your gains and losses from the point of purchase to sale.

The portfolio feature is a good way to keep track of your holdings, but there are more sophisticated programs available if you need to manage a large and changing portfolio.

  4. QUESTION:

When I click the transaction tab in my Yahoo portfolio most of the time none of my positions are showing. 17. QUESTION:
Why is there no time data attached to quotes on Google or Yahoo Finance?
When I access my portfolio data on Google Finance or Yahoo Finance, there is no date or time attached to the data for my stocks (I see a "Last price" column, but it doesn't say from when). Additionally, there is a "Change" column, but it doesn't say over what period. Any ideas why? Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Because it is not a real time report, but up to a 20 min. delay. So at 1:20 PM you are looking at the price for 1:00 PM. Times are better and it may only be a 5 min delay, but since Yahoo Finance is not connected into the exchanges, they can only get reports such as the news report.

    • ANSWER:
It means that you need to put up your portfolio on a website. The link they speak of is, simply, the URL, or address to the site.

You cannot, simply, provide a link that will give the employer access to your personal computer, unless it is set up as a server. That simply means that the website is hosted on your own system.

  21. QUESTION:
How to share stock portfolio on Yahoo Finance?
I am looking to create an online stock portfolio for several people to be able to access so they can track the assets. It can be in Google Finance, Yahoo Finance, or wherever I can get this to work.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You can make a stock watch list on Yahoo Finance and some others sites also. The problem is, you and each person that views the watch list will have to use the same email address and password. If you want to make some watch lists from one address for others to see it, you could make a second email address and password on yahoo and tell everyone what the address and password is. By having a second email address will keep others from getting to your personal mail on your main address. It's a little tricky to make a Yahoo watch list but this is how I do it:

      > Sign Out on Yahoo mail and create a new account
      > Yahoo Finance
      > My Portfolios
      > Create Portfolio in drop-down window
      > Track a symbol witch list
      > Type the Portfolio Name & put the stock symbols
      > Finish
      > Click Edit on the side of Basics
      1- Symbol
      2- Last Trade (with time)
      3- Change
      4- Day's Value Change
      5- Shares Owned
      6- Volume
      7- Price Paid
      8- Holding Value
      9- Holding Gain & Percent
10- Notes (date when you bought)

  22. QUESTION:
how do i hide my resume from being searched by google?
I have a portfolio website and have my resume on the same server with no link to it. However, when i search my name on google my resume is ranked hire than my portfolio page, even though its not linked anywhere....? what can i do to hide my resume from google?

    • ANSWER:
Oh dear, don't just delete it from your server!

      You have three basic options:

1- Upload a robots.txt file to your server. This tells spiders (like google and yahoo) what to index and what not to index. (most thorough)
2- Put a "Robots" META tag at the top of your resume. (Easy but effective)
3- Put "rel='nofollow'" in any link that points to your resume. (Easiest - Not as effective)

These three options can be done by following the steps on this website:
      http://newwebmasters.net/link-building/how-to-prevent-pages-being-indexed/

Once you do it, you will want to rename your resume. This is because it has already been indexed. Where the old resume was, make a new file (using your old file name) that redirects to your portfolio so that if they do click on it from a search engine, they end up where you want them to go.

I hope that made sense. Good Luck!! :)

  23. QUESTION:
Google can now read Flash websites - should I build my portfolio page in Flash? What do you think, and why?

    • ANSWER:
If your portfolio is of your flash design skills then i'd probably say yes, but otherwise i wouldn't use it just for the sake of it, it would depend if your portfolio would benefit from animations, etc, like if its art then a slideshow done in flash might be good. But if theres no real use for it then don't bother.

  24. QUESTION:
Where i can find some article portfolio?
Hello! Do you know where i can find some article portfolios? I have to make a portfolio for my new boss, and i want to see some portfolios too to know how to do it. Please do not post if you don't post a link to a portfolio! Maybe i will take some articles from another portfolio so it would be better if the portfolio wouldn't be indexed by google. :)

    • ANSWER:
If I were you, I would not worry about swiping articles from websites. I would start updating my resume. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but there it is. If you have to steal other people's work to impress your new boss, you're in trouble.

  25. QUESTION:
Anyone have experience with google finance or other sites?
Something tells me Yahoo will prove incapable of fixing this new portfolio page disaster, so I wanted to know what people think about other online portfolio tracking sites?

Any opinions on how Google Finance measures up?

    Any other websites recommended?

Suggestions on how to get off this crappy yahoo train would be appreciated!!

    • ANSWER:
I just began entering my data at Google Finance. Forbes has a Best of the Web Portfolio Tracker column (which does not list Google) and I did check most of them out and found most of them to be lacking due to problems that varied from no intraday value tracking to not being able to add foreign stocks or pink sheet stocks; and many of them were quite pokey. With the data I've submitted so far on Google, it appears to be working fine, fast and simple. Yahoo lost its place as the primary search engine and now it's fixing to lose its place as a favorite financial site.

I'm looking for another job, but don't want my current employer to know. How can I password protect my page and keep it out of Google's site?

  29. QUESTION:
How do I get my website to number 1 on Google?
A competitor (much smaller than my firm) keeps a number one position on search engines. They clearly have someone who knows what they are doing. When I check so called SEO experts none can provide success stories or a portfolio of happy clients - they just want money and to host the site. Any advice?

    • ANSWER:
Getting your website to be #1 on Google will depend on which keyword you want to target.

So first, find out which search keywords you want(the ones that will get you the most relevant, high conversion traffic) and then just start doing SEO for your site. This website will help you find good keywords. You just type in a keyword and it will tell you many searches per day are done for that keyword as well as list other realted keywords: http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook

Just go to http://www.google.com/webmasters and it will tell you what you need to do to get high placement ranking for you keywords. It is very time consuming though and don´t expect to get any results before 3 months for good keywords.

If an SEO service tells you they can do it in less time, they are full of it and if they can do it, its probably for really bad keywords that no one ever searches for.

Try http://www.blindmonkeymedia.com they are a fairly new company but the people that started the website have a good reputation and will actually give you a list of references complete with results. Since they are new they will probably do it at a fair price.

what website do you use to keep track of your portfolio?
I know about google finance, marketwatch and yahoo. is there anything else out there
i actually want something that will allow me to follow lots of stocks, not ones i own.

    • ANSWER:
I primarily use my broker, Scottrade. I can set up multiple watch lists to track stocks, set alerts, check news, etc. When online I currently have 10 different lists that I can toggle between for real time data.

Two of the other online sites I use are Seeking Alpha and Finviz. Links follow. I don't know the limit at SA, but at Finviz you can track a lot of stocks and utilize different portfolios. Both sites also have news features which I really like.

MSNMoney is another one you might want to check. That gives you the ability to check CAPS ratings and see what other investors think about the stock.

I also use Quicken for reports and performance analysis. They have some good online tools for subscribers. But for tax purposes, I prefer Gainskeeper because the IRS recognizes it.

  33. QUESTION:
What is Dow Jones, Nasdaq & the others?
I was wondering what they were, cause they always appear on google portfolio but i do not know what it is :)

    • ANSWER:
Instead of trading stock of one company you trade with a "bundle" of stocks. It is called an index.
Dow Jones is simply a group of "stable" stocks that stay pretty steady with inflation.
They are usually a pretty conservative investment. Same goes for nasdaq.

Nasdaq = National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations
Dow Jones = Dow Jones Industrial Average

I know that godaddy.com does the whole web hosting thing for like a two dollars. But they also have a ".coms" available for ten. What's the best thing to do. I'm a advertising student, and I want a site to impress potential employers. I don't like the look of geocities and google sites. I'm willing to pay, I just need to know what's best.

    • ANSWER:
I thing you are confusing a few things. You can register a .com domain for /year or so, but that just gives you the name. Web hosting is where you site will actually be set up, at godaddy that will cost you about or per month.

The look of your site will controlled completely by yourself. Its typically the free web hosts that want to impose their look on to your site, but not all in fact will do that

Godaddy hosting will do you just fine.

  40. QUESTION:
How do I write a thank-you letter for someones portfolio?
Recently I hosted a benefit dinner and we had someone volunteer to draw portraits. They are an art student at the local college.
I want to write a very specific type of thank-you letter. I know how to write a generalized thank-you letter but I wanted to write one more appropriate for a portfolio. Basically showing that I am vouching for her artistic abilities and work ethic.
    Where can I go?
I tried typing in "How do I write a thank-you letter for someones portfolio" in google and it turned up nothing useful.

    • ANSWER:
In terms of her artistic abilities, most people viewing her portfolio are going to be able to see those. The perspective you have to offer is different than that.

I would state in the letter
      - what your expectations of her were, and how specifically she exceeded those expectations
      - what some of the comments you heard from the attendees about her work
      - how having her present enhanced the event as a whole
      - what elements of her personality you observed that worked well at your event, and how she interacted with the attendees as their portraits were drawn (was she fun and personable, etc)

It is nice if you're able to include your email address or phone number, along with an invitation to contact you for any further questions. A good professional reference is a wonderful thing to have, especially for a student.

  42. QUESTION:
How do I automatically determine the value of a portfolio of stocks on a particular date?
I know I can use Yahoo or Google to create a portfolio of stocks and see the current value of the portfolio. I also know how to get the value of an individual stock on a particular date. What I want to do is be able to get the value of the entire portfolio on a past date and even be able to draw a graph of the value change over a time period. I want the computer to do the work of pulling in all the values of the stocks in the portfolio and graphing it for me. It seems like many people would like to see how their entire portfolio performs rather than just how individual stocks perform over time.

    • ANSWER:
Using iMacros or Excel/OpenOffice macros the whole process of importing the data into a spreadsheet can easily be automatized. There are also some dedicated programs, some of them free, that can do this.

Please help me with further innovative ideas on this topic...
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
You just have to play with grids in your design. Try to use leatherette for your trims and cubic designs. They come in lots of colors. Some are glossy and some have a matte and leather look to it. You can even add thin foam underneath to make your graphics look 3D.

The link below will just give you an idea how to approach your designs.

  47. QUESTION:
Why doesn't the NAV/Price in my portfolio match the true stock price?
I recently opted in to my new employers 401K plan. All of the other stocks and funds in my account, except one, have the same NAV/price and "price per share" if I were to compare the two from my portfolio and, lets say, google finance. The one that doesn't match is the stock of my employer that I have in my portfolio. If I go on google finance and search, it's priced at .93/share. However, in my portfolio it's priced at .81. Why is that?

    • ANSWER:
Are you sure the shares of company "stock" in your account are really shares of stock? Or are they shares of a mutual fund made up of company stock?

For 401(k) accounts, many companies create a mutual fund that contains ONLY company stock and earnings, and the value of each fund share will differ (higher or lower) from the actual market price of the shares. Therefore, you own shares of the FUND. You do not own shares of the stocks within the fund. Your Human Resources Department should be able to explain this.

  49. QUESTION:
Can i use pictures from google in my photography coursework?
i dont mean say i took them myself, i have to reasearch experimental techniques and i am reasearching hannah hoch and editing images using diffewrent techniques in photoshop as reasearch for my final exam and i wanted to do a woman as a machine with like cogs/gears and stuff but i dont have anything to photograph like that so if i took them off google and wrote in my portfolio that it was sourced from the internet would that be ok? And what do i write ... do i put images taken from .... then write the website or just put off the internet?

This is just the experimenting in my portfolio i will be using my own photographs that i have taken in my final exam...

    hope this makes sense thanks...
OR does anyone know anything i could find within the houshold that can be easely disasembled to see like cogs/machinery/ wires etc =]
im year 1 a-level in sixth form =]

    • ANSWER:
You did not mention how far a long in photography you are. Is this one of your first classes or have you been at this for a few years?

The reason I ask is because the project you have picked is very advanced and is usually not attempted until the person (artist) has a vast background in photo manipulation and the resources necessary to carry out the project. Before you get too far down this path, talk to your instructor and see what they think might help you complete your project with the least amount of stress

If you have a look a the darkroom photo manipulation by Jerry Uelsmann, you will not only notice the precision of his work, but that he did not just wake up one morning and start making his specialty prints. He laterally spent years learning his craft and as his skills became better, his images became more complex.

      http://www.uelsmann.com/

My feeling is to complete your project as stated, you would have to spend a lot of time in recycle yards, photographing "cogs/machinery" using different lighting situations (shade, partial shade and full sun) of each piece, so when you assemble your "mechanical woman", you will have all the parts and the lighting on those parts will match the assembled cogs. Or you can shoot them all in the shade and later using Photoshop's tools to induce an artificial lighting effect.

      Good luck on your project

  50. QUESTION:
    Investment - GOOGLE?
Are GOOG shares still expected to grow at least 20% per year?

How can I find out which mutual funds or ETFs have Google in their portfolios?

    • ANSWER:
Yahoo Finance (finance.yahoo.com) is an excellent free source of information. Look under key statistics and analyst ratings for more info. Though I expect Google's growth rate will begin to slow as it is maturing as a company.

Also go to Morningstar.com and get a quote for GOOG. Tab over to "snapshot" and scroll to the bottom of the page. Morningstar will tell which mutual funds are holding Google.
