Industrial Design Portfolio

Oklahoma's prominent place in the oil industry is fortuitous, a result of encompassing the bulk of the hydrocarbon rich Anadarko, Arkoma, and Ardmore geologic basins and their associated shelves and platforms. The sedimentary basins that have yielded the bulk of Oklahoma's oil production are mostly Pennsylvanian in age, but oil and gas reservoirs across 00004000 the State range from Cambrian to Cretaceous. The first commercial paying well, the Nellie Johnstone No. 1, was drilled in 1896 near Bartlesville (Washington County). Completed in 1897 as the discovery well for the giant Bartlesville-Dewey Field, the well ushered in the oil era for Oklahoma Territory. After the turn of the century, discoveries were made in rapid succession in areas that would eventually encompass many of the 26 major oil fields. All but five of the majors were discovered before the end of World War II; the last of them, the Postle Field, was found in Texas County in 1958(Northcutt, 1985). Although the 26 majors constitute only about 1% of the total number of fields, they account for 59% of the total oil produced (Lay, 2001). Until overtaken by California in 1923, Oklahoma remained the leading producing state in the U.S. (Hinton, 2001). Peak annual production of 278 million barrels (762,000 bbls/day) was reached in 1927, with several intermediate highs and lows since then. The peaks and valleys result from changes in the number of wells drilled and completed as well as from the size of the fields being found.

Owners are looking to expand into newly acquired leases and seek accredited investors, both US and International, for rework on existing oil wells and new drills.

Owners own the oil service company and work with leading local consultants with very respectable credentials.

If you are looking to invest in shallow wells with low overhead costs and high returns this is it!

Thousands of acres are open.

Limitless investments from $50,000 to $3 million. If you have extra funds and want to invest in oil this is it. Potential 1 to 2 year return on your investment.

80 years ago this area produced lots of oil.

40 years ago these same wells were pressured and produced lots of oil.

Now these same wells need to be worked on with newer technologies in order to produce more oil again.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What do graduate schools look for in a portfolio for industrial design?
I used to attend the fashion institute of technology for interior design. Now I go to a large university where I study Integrative Arts. I am looking into grad schools for the 2009/2010 school year. So I have a little less than a year to prepare before I apply. I want to know what specific things I should include in my portfolio. I have an Interior Design portfolio, but nothing recent and I need to know specific projects I should start making in order to really wow the schools I am applying to. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
how many projects have u done, outside the class? any internships? man..that pretty much it

  2. QUESTION:
How do I make a good design portfolio?
I just graduated from a University Design (Graphic, Web and Industrial) program. I did the degree because I thought that it would be better than just having a diploma. Unfortunately, the program was very conceptual and arty, so I don’t have any commercial work in my portfolio. This is making it almost impossible to get a job. I don’t know if I should do another program that offers instruction in the business end of design, or I should attempt to do it on my own. Furthermore, I see a lot of other student portfolios that have branding and packaging in them already. Are these projects made up with fake clients, and fake brands, or perhaps redesigns of existing brands? What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
Do like you said - some work on your own. The branding concepts I did in graphic design school were made up. I would not use existing brands and redesign anything - this seems like a bad move for many reasons. Come up with a name of a company, think of what they do and then design a logo and complete logo useage for them. Maybe even packaging. Show how the logo can be used across many different areas - web, color, black and white, etc - Yes, this is very important to have in your portfolio.

EDIT: Making up your own company can probabably bias you a bit as you may come up witha design concept first and then a company/name that will work with it - heh. Not much of a challenge then. Have a friend come up with a Company/Name for you to design for. This might be a bit more realistic

  3. QUESTION:
How do I switch from Mechanical Engineering to Industrial Design?
I work in automotive engineering and the job/environment is stifling. I need a more creative outlet. Industrial design seems perfect to me, but I don't know how to get my foot in the door. Everyone wants a portfolio. I have no clue. Help.

    • ANSWER:
In order to have a portfolio, you need to get a degree in Industrial Design. Search the internet for accredited schools. One of my family members also switched to Industrial Design. Also, be sure to do informational interviews with Industrial Designers to get a feel for how it is. Be sure to research the schools because different schools have varying styles. Some emphasize more technical aspects..whereas others emphasize style. Good luck.

For portfolio and ID tips look at core77.com
You can also sometimes view portfolios from schools by typing in "industrial design art center" and google may be able to pull up a few portfolios for you base on that.
Some schools don't require portfolios - keep that in mind - but most do.
Here are two portfolios - mine and another kids - that are online. Most of us have to create .pdf files and don't have to have a website.

  9. QUESTION:
I have an interview at a design firm this week, what kind of portfolio do I bring with me?
I'm an industrial design student and I've been applying for internships this summer. Some design firms have asked me to come in for an interview to meet me and also to "review your portfolio".

However, I've been sending each company a digital copy of my portfolio so they should already have seen it if not have it.

These days, do employers want to see a hard portfolio - a book with printed images of my works on black paper - or do they want to see a digital copy which would require me to bring in a disk, usb, or my actual laptop?

    • ANSWER:
a lot of people still like to see a hard copy.
This little bit will show them a lot about you!

are you willing to make a hard copy, and present it nicely for them.
or on the other hand, are you technology-savvy and can present your portfolio in a smooth and useful way using your computer?

      it really is your choice!
(you can always buy an ipad and show it on that, that would be really cool! lol!)

  10. QUESTION:
    Bachelors in Industrial Design?
I'm gonna be a senior this year and was considering desgning cars as career so i had a couple of questions:
    1) Do i need to have any kind of experience in engineering before going to a college for industrial design. I know mechanical engineering is kinda like the basis for design so i need help with that. am i required to take engineering in college or what?
    2) i was thinking of going to NJIT. Is it a good college for industrial design or should i look at better ones?
    3) I'm not the best artist also so would it matter? do i need a portfolio to get into a college for design? like are they gonna start teaching from basics or just assume you know how to draw
    4) lastly, is there a good future job scope in that field and is the pay considered good or average?

    • ANSWER:
If you want to design cars - and only design cars not actual mechanical parts - you don't necessarily need a mechanical engineering background at all.
Now, most design schools that are for transportation design or product design DO require portfolios. So they are going to want that - or you can go there and do your first year in basics.
I go to the University of Cincinnati and I am an Industrial Design major - we have a transportation track. UC does not require a portfolio - and is one of few if not the only one out there. But, you have to have a good GPA (3.55 to 4.0) good test scores and class rank. The ID program here is 2nd in the country.
I think you may want to look at other places for ID - particularly transportation design. NJIT is more focused on the engineering -and if you want the cool exteriors/interiors and none of the math then you want an ID major - particularly in transportation.
If out of state is an issue, then start looking at some of the state universities that offer industrial design. If you can take on some student loans, I'd really suggest looking at UC (uc.edu), Pratt (pratt.edu), and Art Center (artcenter.edu). Those are the top in the nation, and out of them UC is the cheapest and the only one that doesn't do portfolios.
UC will spend the first year in drawing classes and design theory - after that you're all into cars and stuff. I suggest you check out the program specs here:
Now, I do go to this college - I am biased, but it is one of the best programs. For this program and a few others, it's a great college. I suggest it only because I know we have partnerships with big car companies like GM and just received a LOT of money for transportation design.
The job market for designers is always open - and some places offer co-ops or interships that will get you experience so you can get out there right after graduation. You do want a program with co-ops - it is so nice and really prepares you and gets you ahead of the game. The pay is pretty much average for a designer - mid range is about 60,000 to 70,000 a year these days for ID.
Go here for the UC info, as a last note: http://daap.uc.edu/design/trans/
Good luck! Hope you find the best program for you!

  11. QUESTION:
I'd like to ask for advice (industrial design & fashion)?
Do you think a company would hire you as a self-taught industrial designer? I would think (or like to think :) ) portfolio matters most?

Is it possible to coopearate with fashion industry if, again, you did not study this. I once read an illustrator was hired by a fashion company because they liked his work so much.

Thanx a lot for any kind of information.

  12. QUESTION:
Industrial Design with Bachelor's degree in Engineering?
I'm currently enrolled in an engineering program and I'm expected to graduate in 2012. Recently, I thought a lot about what I would like to do after my undergraduate study. One thing for sure is that I do not want to be employed right after my engineering program. The primary reason for that is that I wouldn't be able to get jobs that I really want. What I'd like to be is an industrial designer.
First, I would like to hear any stories/advices of people who have pursued in industrial design after an undergraduate study of engineering. I'd like to know if any knowledge learned in engineering was any helpful and beneficial, compared to other students who come straight to industrial design. In addition, most likely I would be going into another undergraduate study for industrial design. The reason why I would like to do so is because I want to take many studio classes. Ideally, I want to go straight into Masters degree in industrial design but then it seems to be a bit of challenging for me to jump into like that without having undergraduate of industrial design. Any true stories/advices on that would be really appreciated.
I've heard from my friend who is in Architecture (undergraduate) that the age of students in most design programs vary a lot, from 18 to 30 or even older. I would be 24~25 when I go to industrial design school. I was wondering what age would be the majority of student body. If industrial design is something that I really want to do and that I have been dreaming about, it shouldn't be an issue but I still would like to know if I would have anyone of my age around :)
Any advices on which school is good for industrial design would be really appreciated. Right now, I'm thinking of Art Centre College of Design (California), Carnegie Mellon, Pratt Institute, and Rhode Island School of Design. If there are any other really awesome industrial design schools that I'm not aware of, please advise :) They don't have to be in the U.S. Anywhere in the world is perfectly fine with me. Italy would be something that I wouldn't mind trying actually but I had hard time searching for one.
Lastly, portfolio is an important part of this whole process, of course. Currently, I do not have many work and I plan to create a lot of them for the next 3 years. I was wondering what kind of approach I should be taking, such as variety of fine arts, 3D modeling, engineering CAD drawings, etc. I also want to somehow distinguish my portfolio that I have a fair bit of knowledge in engineering and that's what it makes me special (Or, is it really?). Myself doesn't know anyone who pursued into industrial design after engieering but I thought it is brilliant because I know what is going on inside of products (in terms of electrical and mechanical) and I would have a wider/somewhat realistic perspective on how products should be designed. Correct me if you like :)
Any answers would be really appreciated and I thank you in advance.
    Kevin

    • ANSWER:
First off, try talking with your adviser. If they are knowledgeable, they can be a wealth of information. However, I know many are kind of worthless.

I have a friend who recently decided to do industrial design for his graduate work. We are both in architecture for undergrad. I think maybe you could try taking some related courses while you are still working on your engineering degree. I don't know if it would be worthwhile to take a second round of undergrad, probably more effective to take a few studio-ish classes now to build a portfolio and go to grad. For architecture, anyway, there are 2 and 3 year grad programs. 2 years if you have an arch. undergrad and 3 if you don't, to catch you up. This may hold true for industrial design, as well.

Get in contact with some of your schools of interest to see what they have to say!

I'm pretty sure the University of Cincinnati's program is a good one, but don't quote me on that.

      Good luck!

  13. QUESTION:
Curriculum vitae for undergrad industrial design program...?
I'm applying to an undergraduate industrial design program and have been asked to send in a CV with my portfolio. I'm wondering what exactly I need to include in this, and looking for samples/templates online has been a little confusing. If anyone has any tips, or knows a website with info on writing these (specifically for an industrial design program or something similar), that would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Courses for INDUSTRIAL DESIGN?
My goal is to major in Industrial Design...but I am trying to figure out the best route to do this....
Syracuse has an Industrial Design program that I hope to be a part of after going to Georgia State for 1 or 2 years but Georgia State doesn't have an Industrial Design major so my question is......What courses should I take that will benefit me the most in helping me build a portfolio to apply to Syracuse?? What major should I declare for now at GA State until I change it to Industrial Design at Syracuse??

    Your help would be greeeaaat!

    • ANSWER:
I would suggest taking art, drawing and design classes. You also should take math, science, english and the core requirements to transfer to Syracuse. Syracuse will look for those foundation classes.

I would suggest contacting Syracuse's admissions department and ask them what classes would you need in order to be qualified for transfer. You can also search on their website.

  15. QUESTION:
Which is school is better for fashion design?
If I want to study fashion design, would it be better to go to carnegie mellon and get a design degree or go to parsons and get a fashion degree?

Carnegien mellon is the top ranked industrial(product) design school so having that on my portfolio would help alot.
Parsons is in New York and it would give me alot more exposure to the fashion world but at the same time it doesn't have the status and the edge carnegie mellon has.

    • ANSWER:
Fashion School is a good way for graduates to find themselves working low wage, high pressure, dead end jobs, until they finally give up and get a real job scrubbing toilets at Taco Bell.

"Fashion" is for ditzy high school girls.

If you MUST study fashion, do so as a specialization in Textile Technology.

  16. QUESTION:
what website can i use to create a FREE online portfolio?
i want to have my portfolio online, which consists of all kinds of art, like graphic design, industrial design, architecture, fine art, graffiti, fashion, etc.
i found some websites like DeviantArt.com but they're not free, or there would be a limited number of images that i can upload...
    please help if you can

    • ANSWER:
Free galleries usually have to cover their costs somehow, usually by adverts which you probably want to avoid. I assume you don't want to use Flickr or similar sites. For a relatively small cost your own domain and website would be ideal and needn't cost too much - look at domain name ads in computer mags. This would also give you a pro email address which helps tell people you are genuine. For a free site try the studio area of the Saatchi site which might suit your requirements. See http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgallery
You could start your own group in Yahoo Groups where there's plenty of space to upload your pix. Cheapest way of all would be to find a friend with their own website and persuade them to let you have a sub-folder on it - nearly as good as having your own site.

Please help! Which college should i go for industrial design?
I'm trying to study for industrial design and currently studying at Texas and have already took basic classes (i am sophomore to junior now). I realized that UT's design program does not really offer for industrial design. Therefore, I am thinking to transfer to another college for industrial design. Do you guys have any great suggestions? I am currently thinking schools for, California State University Long Beach, Art Center College of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, Rhode Island school of Design, University of Cincinnati, and University of Wisconsin. Which school is the best choice? I know that ACCD and Rhode Island is the one of the best private shool for design but i believe it is hard to get in. If i try to get in these schools, do you have also any suggestions (like for portfolios)?
My best choice is CSULB because tuition is cheap, and this school also has connections with many companies like Toyota, GMC, Apple,,,etc. and i think easier to get in.
    Thanks!

  19. QUESTION:
    Degree in industrial design?
Do you need a degree in this field? My guess would be people are interested in hiring the person with the most creative/unique portfolio.

I'm not knowledgeable, as you can see, so please share your thoughts.

    Thanx a lot.

    Merry Christmas xxx

    • ANSWER:
Unless your work is the best, but most likely you have to go to school.

It helps if you go to one of the best schools, like Art Center College Design in Pasadena, CA.

The school will not only prepare you to take on the outside world, but also establish contacts within the industry. Even getting internships too.

Your portfolio would have to be kick ass to get a job without any education in this field.

Between you and someone who has a degree is pretty much not in your favor based on the fact that the degree means that person is proven to get the job done. It's rare for an idiot to just somehow get a degree in the industrial design field.

I know if I'm ever in a position to hire a new person, I will go with the one who went to my school. I know they can get the job done, where someone with no reference on paper... it's taking a risk.

From what I hear... they like to hire their own, so good luck!

But this is assuming your portfolio is no better or worse than everyone else's

The best thing to do is to just apply for the jobs you want. See what happens.

I have worked with some people who were talented on their own... went to a smaller design school and now have landed a job in that field.

      So, anything is possible.

      Good luck!

  22. QUESTION:
Help on making an art portfolio?
I've read that a portfolio must contain some of your best work and in every medium posible. The problem is I don't know many mediums, since I've never been able to afford art classes. I only know pencil and ink (in which I think I am pretty good), charcoal (in which I am terrible) and pastels (which I''m learning now). As you can see, I don't know how to do anthing in color and I've tried, but it always comes out terribly. College deadlines are sometime in the early months of the year or in the last ones and it is now that I am taking art class in my school. I won't be able to paint anything probably until february or march. Apart form art, graphic design and illustration, the field I am most interested in is design; industrial design and fashion design. How do I compose a portfolio for those? Are portfolios digital or do you just send copies or photos of your work in some kind of folder? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
They want you to use a variety of mediums to see your scope, but your portfolio is your own, so you can favour the area you're best at. If you're good at pencil and ink, why not include some colour there? It's no use including many mediums if you don't think they're very good. You could include some mixed media pieces, eg. pen and ink with some collage. You could include some photography maybe or sculpture - art can be just about anything - don't limit yourself...

It will also depend on the course you're going for - fine art will want you to include as many mediums as possible, whereas industrial design will want to see your skill in technical drawing, and fashion, photos and examples of your work in that area.

When I did a portfolio, it was mainly photos of my work with some originals (that could be put into the same folder), mounted on black card in a folder. I don't know if it is done digitally these days. Perhaps for a graphic design course it could be... Talk to your teachers about it. They should have a good idea of what you should include in your portfolio.

  23. QUESTION:
Should I go to a university or art school?
What is the difference between getting a fine arts degree from a university, as opposed to an accredited art college. I'd like to major in Painting, Industrial design, or Metals. Apart form getting scholarships from Portfolio submissions, how likely is it that I could get an academic scholarship at most art schools. I have an okay GPA (about a 3.75) and my CRI is 3.9, but I have always taken AP/honors classes. Any reconditions for art schools or universities would be much appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
I think it depends on what you plan on studying, and why. If you want to study Industrial design, or some other degree that could actually lead to employment, go to a good University, and try to get a scholarship. If you decide you're more interested in trades or craft, a college will do just fine, and can sometimes be better. If you really have no idea, Find a good well-rounded school that offers all the different things you'd like to try, and have a foundation year, where you try a bunch of different things before choosing your major. Either way, look for a school that has a good reputation for what you want to study, and instructors who are working artists themselves.

      Good luck!

  24. QUESTION:

  27. QUESTION:
Do you think I Can get into RISD? Please tell me your opinion!?
I'm in the process of applying to RISD but I'm a little curious if I have what it takes to make it! What are your thoughts?

I have a 3.7 GPA my ACT score is a 22 on the writing I scored an 8
I'm part of my school's national honor society, recycling club, creative writing, tennis, track, student council, and yearbook
A few words that would describe me is artistic, open minded, hardworking, and assertive.
Outside of school I am passionate about photography, digital design, website making, filming shorts, and working out.
This is my senior year of high school and I am taking trigonometry, humanities, yearbook, physics, and ap biology. In the past I've taken all mandatory math, science, english core classes plus journalism and two years of German.
I'm asian and both my parents are physicians.
I'm getting a recommendation letter from my yearbook adviser and my counselor.
My greatest accomplishment is being an official design editor for my school's yearbook. I'm basically designing a well renown yearbook that will be published and shown around the world! My graphic design talent is my strongest attribute. I've been photoshoping since 6th grade. It's been a serious hobby since then. I'm well educated in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and illustrator.
I plan on majoring in graphic design and/or industrial design.
For my portfolio I'm planning to put in my top graphic designs, top photography, and yearbook designs. Is it bad I don't have any drawing pieces? I'm okay at drawing but digital art and photography are my strong points.

I guess that's the gist of myself. Do you think I have what it takes?
Also... is it far fetch of me to dream to dual enroll in broth RISD and Brown University? Or is that too out of my league?

    • ANSWER:
I never went to RISD but I grew up around there and have known a lot of students and faculty, as well as having studied with many graduates.

Your portfolio matters. RISD was founded to supply designers to the then-thriving textile industry and it remains a place where you are judged first on your skills, not on your intelligence and character (you can go to Brown or New School for Social Research/Parsons if that is what you want to study). In other words, it is one of the best CRAFTS schools in the world. It is not anti-intellectual but even an alumna like Jenny Holzer, who makes electronic signs mainly, is VERY capable and rounded in her approach to artwork.

Reread the portfolio requirements for your choice of study, put in what they tell you to put in (and if they say drawing and it's not the best, put in your best efforts and compliance -- ability to follow directions WILL count in your favor, as long as you put in things you are strong at). And if you want opinions about whether you are RISD material, show us your artwork. I've known High School Dropouts who were accepted there based on their portfolios.

  28. QUESTION:
can anyone help me find information about jonathan ive?
I'm looking for any information about Jonathan Ive. He's the senior vice president of Industrial Design at Apple. If you guys can post links with his bios, portfolios, awards, or any other information that would be great. An even bigger plus if someone can find me a link to his email address. thanks

    • ANSWER:
Jonathan Paul Ive, CBE (born February, 1967) is an English designer and the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. He is internationally renowned as the principal designer of the iMac, aluminum and titanium PowerBook G4, MacBook, unibody MacBook Pro, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Critics regard Ive's work as being among the best in industrial design, and his team's products have repeatedly won awards such as the Industrial Designers Society of America's Industrial Design Excellence Award.
Ive was the winner of the Design Museum's inaugural Designer of the Year award in 2002, and won again in 2003. In 2004, he was a juror for the award.
The Sunday Times named Ive as one of Britain's most influential expatriates on 27 November 2005: "Ive may not be the richest or the most senior figure on the list, but he has certainly been one of the most influential... The man who designed the iPod and many more of Apple's most iconic products has shaken up both the music and the electronics industry." Ive was number three on a list of 25.
Ive was also listed in the 2006 New Years Honours list, receiving a CBE, for services to the design industry. The British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, was revealed as being an iPod owner in June 2005.A recent Macworld poll listed Ive joining Apple in 1992 as the sixth most significant event in Apple Inc. history, while MacUser (a subsidiary of Macworld) writer Dan Moren suggested in March 2006 that, when the time comes for Steve Jobs to step down as CEO of Apple Inc., Ive would be an excellent candidate for the position, justifying the statement by saying that he "embodies what Apple is perhaps most famous for: design."
On July 18, 2007, Ive received the 2007 National Design Award in the product design category for his work on the iPhone.
The Daily Telegraph rated him the most influential Briton in America on 11 January 2008.
In July 2008, Ive was awarded the MDA Personal Achievement award for the design of the iPhone.
In May 2009, Ive received an Honorary Doctorate from the Rhode Island School of Design.
      Personal life
Ive is married to a historian named Heather and is the father of twins. The family lives in the Twin Peaks area of San Francisco, California.
He is an alumnus of Northumbria University having studied the Design for Industry programme and was awarded an Honorary degree from the University in 2000.

He won the Design Museum's first Designer of the Year prize for the 2002 iMac and iPod.

  29. QUESTION:
Need help finding a good photography program in Dallas.?
Something relatively cheap, like a community college. I already have a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design so I don't really care about the degree so much as just a good place to learn. I would like to make a part-time job out of it, possibly going full time after I get a good portfolio going.
I was looking at Richland College, it seems nice there but I literally just moved here so I don't know....

    • ANSWER:
Why don't you look at this website and look over some of the portfolios in there then find a photographer in your area that you like their style of work and then contact them and see if they would be interested having an assistant.

      http://www.onemodelplace.com

      1. You should learn the technical aspects of photography and your camera (composition, shutter speed, depth of field etc), once you understand these you will be able to create better images.

      2. Shoot in "M" (manual mode) because you will have more control over your camera and not the other way around. When you are in one of the "Auto" modes the camera will just read the highlights and shadow areas and try to get you a picture. The camera is not smart enough to know what you are shooting.

      3. You can start reading all kinds of books on this subject and get information from the internet. This includes web based classes, manufactures web sites to personal blogs.

      4. Buy the best DSLR camera that you can afford this also includes good lenses. Take out your camera and manual sit down and go over all the buttons and knobs etc.. this is the best way for you to learn what your camera can do.

      5. Start shooting with your camera to get practice and from what you are learning from reading and doing you will get better. Practice does make perfect. Take notes while shooting and then look at your photos on the computer find the best one from that set and see what you did to get the shot.

      6. You can get yourself a job as a photographers assistant (be it payed or free) and learn from that person.

      7. My suggestion is to find a part of photography that you would have an interest in and point in that direction.

Since you have access to the internet here is a start: Some you have to pay for and some are free.

  30. QUESTION:
How do I get a good graphic design job?
I have been applying for graphic design jobs for a while now but not getting interviews. I have recently changed my boring black and white CV to a colourful art piece as well as my portfolio. Im worried employers arent looking at me because I have no tertiary qualifications but learnt my skills on the job for 6 years. I also work for an industrial company which is perhaps why agencies and boutiques are not looking interested. Can anyone give me some good advise on how to go about getting noticed for a graphic design job, the next level up?
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I had the same problem for a while, and I'm afraid there is no hard and fast answer to that question. Graphic design is a very subjective profession. I started working for myself full time a few months ago, and I have found that in doing this, clients are a lot more interested in my portfolio and past work that I have done than in my resume or where I got my training.

However, when you are applying for a regular design job in someone else's firm or any other type of company, unfortunately that resume tends to rise high in the ranks of importance.

A good way to find out why you aren't getting callbacks is to ask. Email or call some of the companies where you applied, and see if you can speak to the person who was taking the applications. Be respectful and explain that you are trying to improve your resume and portfolio and you might be surprised how many of them are willing to open up and talk to you about why you were not selected.

Good luck in your job search! In the meantime, try websites like http://www.getafreelancer.com and http://www.guru.com for freelance jobs.

  31. QUESTION:
Will awesome grades, but mediocre-to-average artistic skills get me into an art school?
I've spent my high school career preparing for colleges that only care about class ranks, GPAs, and how much you "applied" yourself. I do have some art classes under my belt, but I'd like to pursue a degree in industrial design. To be honest, my art skills are pretty average: nothing special. But if it's something I love, I'm motivated to improve, and I have shown that I'm a hard worker and an academically-challenged student, will I still have a chance at these colleges? It seems as if the portfolio seems really, really crucial. And a career in industrial design is very science-based as well (which I have a strong background in and it's what I'd be applying for), as well as a strong digital arts background, just not so much for say, sketching or painting. Do you think I'd have a shot?

  32. QUESTION:
Ahhhhhh!!! What am I going to do with the rest of my life?!?!?!?
I am 20 years old and graduated high school in 2006. Right after, I went to a tech school for one semester of Ultrasound Technology and didn't like the medical field. I finished out the year with marketing classes. Starting a new year, I spent it doing a Clothing Design major at the University of Minnesota. I went through a portfolio review and haven't gotten the restults but I'm almost hoping I fail as an excuse to no have to do it. I kind of like it but not sure I want to spend 4 more years there (double major with graphic design) and so much money. I'd like to find a 2 year industrial design degree and be a product designer or even try music production. It's almost too late to apply for another school for fall if I fail or choose not to continue with clothing design. I hate that I've bounced around so much but my generals are pretty much done. I feel like I'm wasting time and money. Should I keep it up or change majors or what?!?! My mom really loves it that I go to the U of M :(

    • ANSWER:
become a medical doctor. high in demand & make ton of money. only downside is it takes 10 years but I'd do it.

  33. QUESTION:
    Art Center, Pasadena?
So I want to major in Industrial Design, and Art Center is the leading industrial design school for my major.
I know it's a very competitive school esp. for product/transportation design

I'm planning on applying for fall 2009, and I'm graduating from high school this year- and i know it's rare that they get accepted into art center.
But when i went to visit the art center admission counselor
He really liked my work and said he hasn't seen a high school student with my talent...
& he remembered me at Portfolio Day
He tells me what i need and told me to email him with my work and he'll help me...
But he hasn't emailed me back.

Is there any chance that I will get in?

    • ANSWER:
Of course there is always a chance, but as you know, it's rare for students just out of high school to be accepted. However, there are exceptions!

How long has it been since you emailed the counselor? If it's been over a week, resend your email with this at the top: "I'm resending this email in case it never made it to your email box. Please let me know that you've received this. Thanks!" Always put something like: "Please confirm receipt of this email, Thanks!" at the bottom of important emails. He may have received your email and meant to email you back and just been too busy. (That's my problem!)

Don't be shy about contacting the admissions dept. They like it when the prospective student, rather than the parent, contacts the school. It shows initiative.

      Good luck!

  34. QUESTION:
Do you think I'll get into RISD?
I'm an average student at a really difficult school my waited GPA is 3.15 but for RISD it's 2.8. I don't think that I submitted SAT's because mine were terrible. I wrote a fantastic essay and my letters of rec are superb. I have taken art for three years at school and I recently won first place for sculpture in a local art competition. I also took a pre-college class at CCA for industrial design, which is what I'm probably getting into. Here is a link to my portfolio. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8228422@N08/sets/72157623200958611/ Im hearing from RISD in two days so you can check back and actually see if I got in, and I got into Parsons and CCA. What do you think?
I apologize that I used the word waited instead of weighted to describe my grade point average.

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, there's a pretty good chance you'll get in. Your portfolio looks good, you show some talent that you can definitely refine while you're in college, wherever you go.

I'm thinking it might help your situation a bit once you're in college if you can get your grammar on the up and up and know your facts. It probably helps to know which schools you submitted your SATs to; you did the paperwork, and if it is important that you get in there, you should probably know what you sent them. Also, waited has to do with time, weighted has to do with an adjusted GPA based on taking advanced courses.

Why go to RISD when you can go and live in NYC at Parsons? You're going to have to make that decision when you get into RISD. Good luck.

  35. QUESTION:
Interested in NYU or Columbia... have any advice?
I'm still feeling vague about my major to be honest, but I've always felt an affinity to New York. I'm hoping I won't be disappointed if I make it there, but I'd like to try anyway. I just started my junior year, I'm in the International Baccalaureate program. I have a weighted 4.162 (it dropped from 4.22 sophomore year due to some laziness) and about a 3.8 unweighted (this I'm unsure about but I believe it's around that range) however my PSAT scores are a little poor. Without prior preparation--I actually was briefly asleep during the two I took soph and freshman year, I scored a 1700-1850. I'm hoping with actual studying I'll hit at least 2000 but I'm crossing fingers for a 2200. My extended essay is probably going to be on mass hysteria/the Salem Witch trials. I'm a co-president and founder of a fashion/donation/DIY club, I work at a non-profit Writing Tutor Center headed by my high school's English department, applying for NHS (a mistake I should have done in soph year), math tutor to middle schoolers, art lessons from a group studio out of school, Treasure Trove (affiliated with Inova Hospital) occasional volunteer and Public Library volunteer. I am considering joining Amnesty International. I am also planning on dancing either in hip hop classes and/or for my high school's International Culture Night. I'm signed up to be a part of my high school's Film Club's Public Relations and upcoming Treasurer of dance classes being offered at school but those are still in the working. I will be graduating in 2012 with 150 hours of Creativity, Service, and Action if I continue the IB curriculum. I am thinking of making a study group in favor of upcoming SATs and I am in the Asia/Culture Club as well as Japanese Honor Society. My parents are saving for a one to two week language excursion in Tokyo for Summer 2011. I was a violinist the first two years of highschool but dropped it in favor of the IB curriculum (IB Japanese is not offered but I enjoy the language so I picked up French I & II for the ab initio test). When it comes to hobbies, I am exceptional at analytical work and creative writing but I prefer the latter. I also am decent in sketching but due to not being trained/practicing enough throughout high school, I have no portfolio and my painting skills are very weak. I am learning Korean on the side from a friend. I plan on double majoring in picking up some art classes in college just because I love it, but perhaps Psychology, Business, Architecture or Industrial Design as a second major. I'm hoping to score some scholarships since I'm aiming out of state (originally from Northern Virginia) so I'm a little nervous. I feel like I haven't prepped enough. I'm not really interested in UVA and VA Tech is my safety because I'm a legacy... Any tips/opinions on the colleges mentioned, out of state tuition/rent, and if I'm along the right path? I'd appreciate anything (sorry this is so long)--thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
First of all, both of these institutions are private...so there is no such thing as 'out-of-state' or 'in-state' tuition for them as all students are charged the same sticker price in tuition.

If you are hyping to score a scholarship to afford going to university then NYU is out of the question. They offer little to no financial aid to their students and their tuition is close to ,000 per year. Add on top of that the cost of living in NYC. Columbia may be more likely to offer scholarships but i wouldn't get your hopes up too much. Even if you got a full-ride to Columbia the cost of living in NYC for four-years will cost you way more than going to an in-state public university for your degree. The only way students can afford to go to university in NYC is if mommy and daddy are footing the bill or they get themselves into an outrageous amount of student loan debt that will plague their lives for the next 10-20 years. Not worth it.

If money is an issue, apply to in-state public schools and private universities in cheap parts of the country, such as the Midwest and the South. You can move to NYC and EARN money there when you are done. Be smart...

  36. QUESTION:
How do I get my 24 year old lazy older brother his first job?
How do I get a very moody, lazy, lying 24 year old brother to get his first job?

Hey, this is kind of embarrassing to ask, but my older brother is 24 years old, still living with mom, dad and me (I'm 18 years old), he never helps around the house, stays upstairs in his bedroom smoking, always going to sleep late like 5:00AM and wakes up afternoon cracked out all moody, never helps wash dishes or garbage nor mow the lawn, and he never had a job before! I always have to help my parents with everything! He gets angry very easily, possibly from smoking and I can't say anything to him. He did graduate college major is Industrial Design from a decent university, but never tries to get a job. I found out he lied to his professors in school saying he has a good salary paying job right after graduating. My brother is the type of person who lies, to look good or impress someone. When my parents ask him to apply for a job, he comes up with a bunch of lies, saying things like, "I'm always staying up until 3:00AM applying for jobs on Monster or Craigslist." OR "I'm working on my portfolio all night." He's been saying that since he was 21 after college. OR "I went to apply at Apple store, but they told me there are no job openings." I asked my brother if they gave him any type of papers for applying and he tells me every things digital.

BTW he freaking smokes, got a bunch of tickets my mom paid for, never pays for gas and goes out every weekend lying to my parents saying he's going for an interview or some b.s. And my parents know he's going out to party because I talked to them, but I don't understand why they're still wiping his butt for him. I'm really worried, I'm leaving for college soon and I don't want my parents dealing with any of this because my brother keeps lying! I know for a fact, I can tell.
A couple of things you should know about my family is my mom makes all the money, business women and my dad is a stay home dad who is retired. My older brother will only talk to my mom about his tickets, problems with money, everything and I can hear them talking. I just don't understand why my mom keeps giving him money, pay for cell phone bill, his tickets, gas, everything. As my mom got older (48 years old), she softened up, but she still wants him to get a job. My dad kind of understands where I'm coming from, but somehow can't put pressure on my brother. With the economy like this my mom's stressed about work and feeding the family, I just don't understand why they're letting my older brother lie and go party. I even had a job before and my older brother who's 24 never has experience. Please, if you know anyone I can call or contact, please help me! If you have ANY suggestions, I don't care if they're negative, just help me out with this lazy older brother situation! Thank You Very Much.

ok soooo im new to this stuff, because ive been doing it on paper for like 6 years. soo what i want to do with the software is he able to make 3d renderings of houses, furniture, engines, cars, airplanes, and various other objects, but without spending like ,000. also something ive been looking for is a software that will allow me to move pieces of the object such as pull out a draw from a desk, or compress the suspension of a rc car. i am currently in the military, but i am aspiring to become a industrial/architectural/mechanical engineer so i would like to start building a portfolio/practicing. what should i do?

    • ANSWER:
If you want to start of easy, without any price, try Google Sketchup. I have used it since I was 10. It's easy to use and fast. Although it doesn't look very good for renders. If you want nice image quality, get Kerkythea. It's a proper 'renderer' that will give your models some 'spunk'. AutoCad and shit are hard to use especially if you want arcitecture and the like. Sketchup lets you see what your doing, which is why I like it. And it's free. :D

  40. QUESTION:
How can I reach my talent?
I am a 25-year-old girl from Iran, graduated as an Industrial Engineer with a high GPA and now is working as a sales expert in a company...As you may know ,we have no faciility or freedom in Iran,so I ,like most of other Iranian youngs, want to apply for an american university,BUT there is a prolem...I dont like my major, computing, mathematics ...!If I apply for a different field such as Art or design ,I need a portfolio or work experience in this field. As I dont have anything just my passion about Art,I have to apply for engineering which I really dont like! and if I go to gather some experience in Art field and then apply, I absolutely lose the time coz Iran's condition is so shaky and unpredictable and you dont know what is going to happen on the next day!

    • ANSWER:
      hi

congratulations to you in your many accomplishments - even if you dont completely like what you are doing you should feel very proud of all of your success - so be positive and anything can happen.

i think that if you want to study art you should follow your passion. if you have a good GPA and so much success in your field it will help you to get into any school for a graduate program, even in art. you might not have the experience at an actual job in the art field, but you still can put together a portfolio of your work to submit to art schools. if you arent sure what to put into a portfolio google it, and see what other artists who are getting their degree and are working in your medium are including in their own portfolios. this will also give you some idea of what skills would be expected for someone entering a graduate program in your field. you dont necessarily have to do your graduate work in the same educational field that your bachelors degree was in, so it is possible to go to school for art even if you didnt before, you might just have to do a bit more studying when you get there.

what i would do is get online and research art programs in schools in the states or wherever you want to go. see which ones are ranked highest and see what their application requirements are. these are the schools that will be the hardest to get into and have the most requirements to be accepted, but remember - you dont have to go to one of the top ranked schools to get a good education, sometimes i think that the smaller schools that are more unknown are actually better because you get a lot of individual attention from teachers and more opportunity to show your work in a smaller school. i guess it depends on how much you like to have a lot of competition, and how important the famous name and reputation of the school is to you when you make your choice.

after you have found two or three schools that you like best, email the head professor in the art department that is coordinator of your medium. you will be more likely to get accepted if the faculty has some idea of who you are and what your story is before you begin to apply. let them know about your situation, tell them how serious you are, what your experience has been so far and email the professors digital scans of your art so that they can see it for themselves. you have a very good opportunity to use your situation to your advantage - many people in the states would want to help a woman from iran come here and study to follow her dream. maybe if they like you enough you can even apply and they can offer you a talent or merit based scholarship to help you come and study.

if all else fails you can apply to engineering departments in schools that also have a good art department and then see if you can switch after you have been accepted to the university - you can probably switch before you even go to start school. i bet though that if you try hard enough you will find many art departments that will accept you - just remember to keep up your artist creativity and keep making new artworks so that your passion never dies. i hope for you the best of luck and more than your dreams!

feel free to ask me any other questions anytime about this - i am a musician not an artist but its still closely related fields and the application process is similar. i know what its like to be filled with this desire to be artistic, so dont give up and stay focused and positive and it will all come together.

i hope this helped - take care!

  44. QUESTION:
do i need extension 1 mathematics to be a video game programmer/developer?
i'm studying in Australia and i wanna get into Qantm College, but i was wondering if i need Extension 1 maths to enter the course. I'm studying both Advanced and Extension 1 but i'm considering dropping Ext 1 as a subject. if i don't do Ext 1 but do well (band 5/6) in Advanced do i still have a chance of getting in?
Also, the website said Maths is only necessary for the Programming course, not the Designing course so i was wondering if that was true and would completing HSC Industrial Technology: Multimedia increase my chances (because i have a portfolio of my work)?

Thank You :) I really appreciate any answers (i really want to enter the gaming industry)

    • ANSWER:
I was looking into a similar kind of course. When it comes to game design, that is basically you knowing the fundamentals of what makes a game work and fun to play. You wouldn't any particular math skills for a course like that. Programming on the other hand, usually schools ask that you have a good understanding of calculus. Partly because the math would help with the coding itself, partly because the problem solving aspect of programming is supposed to be similar to that in calc. Hope that helps. So if your not big on math, I say go with the design degree, that's what I am planning on going for.

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If you haven't yet, go to college. It helps a lot and when you finish, they'll offer you jobs.
