A fun teddy bear party is not a difficult thing to pull of with a little creativity and some things that you can find round your house! Here are some quick ideas for making the party "beary" fun!
Invitation ideas
Buy some inexpensive rubber stamps with bear images and let your little one make homemade invitations. Or cut a piece of cardstock into the shape of a bear and write your invitation on that. Free clipart can be found for this purpose in many places on the Internet. Make sure you include the request for all the guests to bring their own bear to the teddy bear party too!
Decoration ideas
When kids think of bears they usually think of honey and bees, so a big hit for decorations is LOTS of yellow and black balloons and streamers. If possible have various teddy bears all around the room as well to tie in the theme.
Menu ideas
When you're hosting a teddy bear party even your menu should be centered on teddy. Here is a cute way to turn Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches into a beary fun treat!
Spread your peanut butter and jelly onto eight whole-wheat hamburger buns. Now here's where the fun begins. Cut four of the eight buns in half. On a large tray or covered cookie sheet, arrange the buns into a shape of a teddy bear. For the tummy, put one whole bun and surround that with 4 half buns. Another whole bun becomes the head/face, with two half buns on the topsides of the head for the ears. Two whole buns become the legs and the final two half buns turn out off of the body to make arms. Garnish the face/head bun with raisin eyes and a strawberry slice mouth and you've got a bear! Use a separate tray for additional sandwiches and watch for all the smiles! Mix some honey and yogurt together for a great dip for cut fruit and your menu is complete!
Bear Party - Activities and craft ideas
Crafts with a bear theme abound but here are some quick ideas for your teddy bear party. Make a paper bear chain (paper dolls) that the kids can color and decorate. Use paper plates to make paper bear masks. Bead a bear collar (necklace). Take a picture with all the kids and their own bears and decorate a simple scrapbook page to honor the occasion. Decorate teddy bear cookies with colored icing and various decorations.
Bear Party - Game ideas
Pin the honey pot on the teddy bear - if you have an artist in the family, draw a large teddy bear on poster board and cut out honey pots. Blindfold each child individually and see if they can put the honey pot into the teddy bear's hand.
Hot Teddy Bear - like hot potato only pass the teddy bear to the music. When the music stops, the person with the teddy bear is out.
Toss the honey pot - draw a large bear head with an open mouth on poster board and lay it on the floor. Using yellow beanbags as the "honey" each child throws the bag to see if it will land in the bear's mouth.
Take home gift ideas
Purchase yellow lunch bags (available at party stores) and decorate with bee stickers. Fill with gummy bears, teddy grahams, miniature stuffed teddy bears and fun bear jewelry. Or if you want to go all out, hire a stuffed animal party planner to come and have each child make their own stuffed animal as part of the party.

QUESTION:
What are some good things to put in an art portfolio?
Currently I'm in seventh grade, and trying to get into eighth grade advanced art next year. Doing so, I need a portfolio of some of the stuff I've done. I think right now the art teachers just want to see that kids understand the basics of drawing and can apply them to their work. Currently all I have is a pencil drawing of a pair of high-heels shaded in and foreshortened awesomely, and I guess I'll have to put a human form of some kind in there eventually. I was also thinking of perhaps drawing a street corner or something like that so show I understand perspective? What would you recommend? Also, is five or six drawings enough?
Thank you!-

QUESTION:
Art college portfolio?
I am absolutely freaking out because tomorrow is the day I photograph my portfolio for college submission, in order to make the deadlines. The two art schools I am applying to are Mass Art in Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I am also submitting a portfolio to UMass Amherst, to get into their art program. I am trying to make last minute adjustments to everything and I am so worried. Can someone give me some feedback on the description list provided? Thanks!1. Prisma colored pencil still life of fruit
2. Pencil drawing of my sister covering her face with her hands, with the lyrics to MGMT's song "Kids" scrawled in the background
3. Pencil drawing of a woman, a teenager, and a little girl blowing on a dandelion
4. Pencil drawing of a camera taking a picture of a ceiling, with a picture of clouds on the viewing screen
5. A self portrait in unnatural colors in acrylic paint
6. A picture of two flowers from my yard in oil pastel, mixed with turpentine. the background is completely green with leaves scratched into the oil pastel.
7. A small self portrait, abstractly done, made out of newspaper
8. A piece based on song lyrics, of a girl on a train looking out to LA, in chalk pastel
9. Two small paintings: one of candy, and one of party favors, in acrylic paint to show observational skills
10. Glass earrings
11. Pencil drawing of my sneaker getting caught in bike spokes (note: I am mentioning in my description list that this was not intended for RISD submission, because it is not)
12. Texture study/ rubbings in sketchbook
13. Collage of city photographs (I am getting them lab developed now, and piecing them together tonight)
14. Work in progress: oil painting of myself sitting on a cloud
15. Work in progress: still life of wedding objectsSo as you can see, right now I have the bare minimum and two of them are works in progress. I have other pieces, but they definitely don't display my best skills. So any feedback would be appreciated or even any ideas of last minute sketches/studies I could do today. Thanks!
I don't have pictures for all these so I figure the descriptions will have to suffice.-
ANSWER:
When you're putting together your portfolio, the most important thing, in my opinion is to show as much variety as possible. It sounds like you've already got a good variety of different materials and subjects. You're definitely on the right track! And don't panic; just have confidence in what you've done. If you're really serious about getting into these schools, your artwork will reflect that, so I wouldn't worry!I wouldn't recommend doing anything last minute, because...well, it's last minute! When you're rushed and stressing out, the quality of your artwork is going to suffer. When I have critiques at school (I'm an art student), I'd rather have a few quality pieces to hang up than a lot of terrible, rushed ones.
That's my two cents; hope it helps!

QUESTION:
Art volunteer for kids with disabilities?
I'm trying to find a place were I can volunteer to for kids with disabilities and do small art project or any volunteering that involves painting, drawing, etc to help an organization. I actually was an art student in high school and took art all 4 yrs and ended up creating a portfolio with all my art projects, I LOVE ART.... but since I started college it's been almost a year that I haven't done anything artist and I really miss art.I am a pre-med student so I don't get a lot of free time, but I do want to volunteer somewhere were I can express my artistic abilities along with helping others.
I have tried sites like volunteerhouston, craigslist, volunteer match but can't seem to find anyplace to volunteer that is artistic. I live in Houston Texas in the southwest area, if anyone knows any organizations or any agencies that are planning on doing artistic projects or volunteering-- feel free to add suggestions.
Thanks.

QUESTION:
what kind of art that displays color would be best for a tattoo portfolio?
i'm working on my art portfolio to become a tattoo artist and i know it would be good to include color scheme so they know i can work well with color also.i've never really used anything besides crayons or colored pencils (hate them) i just draw and when i was a kid and tried to add color with crayons or something it seemed like it would ruin the whole drawing.
what kind would look really good for a tattoo portfolio for an apprenticeship? like water colors, paint, airbrush and so on?
i want to be able to really wow the artist apprenticing me. all advise is welcome
also, here is a drawing that i made not long ago (so you can have a rough idea of what i do), it's from a reference but it is NOT traced (my scanner kinda took away some of the quality though)

ANSWER:
Awesome skull! Anything to prove diversity would be cool. I'm assuming they will look for talent, detail etc. rather than a lot of color.
And your personality will count as well. You're gonna have to fit in with the shop's vibe, make sure you're familiar with it.Good luck!
I would add a lot of different size pieces...and different types as well...portrait, horror, script lettering, banners, flowers etc.
Make sure they get the point that you're willing to work hard.

QUESTION:
Does anyone know of any art colleges that don't require an intense portfolio for application?
My daughter is a rising high school senior and has had art classes in school, but when we went to visit Maryland Institute College of Art, they said they require at least 12 finished pieces that illustrate one concept and would prefer 20-30(!). She has a very rigorous academic schedule this coming year (in addition to the need for a portfolio) and is quite concerned about being able to get it all done. I heard that the University of Cincinnati has a great graphic design school that doesn't require a portfolio for admission... any others that are good for kids interested in graphic design / interactive media / animation? Any help would be most appreciated!-
ANSWER:
This is NOT a good idea. If she gets into a good art school she will be competing against kids who are on fire for art. She hasnt done even a dozen pieces! That's not 'on fire.' No one is going to care about her academic schedule in art school, they want to know if she makes art. She must make up her mind if she wants to spend her life competing against classmates obsessed with art, and not try to take a short cut around the first little minor hurdle that the faculty have set up.

QUESTION:
5 year old son and his paintings....?
I am good friend's with my 5 year old son's kindergarten teacher, so we exchange e-mails.Today I got an e-mail saying this:
Dear Gabbbie,
I was looking over the kids' art portfolios last night and I came across a picture in Antonio's profile. It's of a girl and I think she's wearing a bra and underwear and there's a little hole on her nose. Outside of her mouth is something brown. The caption is "Roxi when baby-sitting".Please talk with Antonio.
~Katherine.Roxi is my 12 year old daughter that used to smoke, but doesn't anymore. I talked to my son and he said that once when Roxi was baby-sitting, she sat in her bra and panites on the porch and was smoking.
How can I explain to my son that it is not appropriate to draw pictures like that? I already scolded my daughter and added another week onto her grounding(she is groudned for running up her cell-phone bill and smoling)for smoking infront of her brother and being nude.
My 12 year old has a therapist.
I did take the phone away.
Around my boys(10 and 5) I am always dressed fully. SOMETIMES around my 12 year old and 9 month old daughters I am dressed in my undies and a top or a bra and jeans, but never infront of my boys!-
ANSWER:
first of all, bra and panties isn't nude! the human body is a part of nature, i think you ought to include that in your talk(i have a 5 yr old son myself, a 11, and 15 yr old sons also) but you do need to talk to him about the appropriateness, but also remember he is only 5 and probably wont understand his wrongdoing! Therefore, you need to start with the problem!your 12 yr old, i really hope, for her sake she has quit smoking, i started at 13 and it was the biggest mistake of my life (of course hindsight is 20/20, please pass the message on to her=D) unfortunately it sounds like you really have your hands full with your girl, and she hasn't even hit her teens yet=(
I definitely would suggest a therapist cuz i think your def going to need it eventually, might as well get into the groove, as for your little boy, i am sorry he doesn't have an older sibling that he can look up to for a positive role model.
HAPPY NEW YEARS ANYWAY!

QUESTION:
How to convert an MP3 to a M4V?
I have to submit an Art Portfolio for my College too see if we can get into our majors. Freshman all take Foundation and we all gotta do our best in order to try and get into the art majors we want.Anyways. . .
the only way we can show sound comps are through m4v's.
And they tell you to convert but they only tell students how to convert with Mac's.
Since Mac's are for some weird reason "required" by stupid art kids. SO stupid, PC's can run photoshop too right? If your not a retard you can use a PC, instead of saying DUR MACS ARE USER FRIENDLY DUR DUR AND I BELIEVE IN NOAH AND THE ARC. DUR GET A VIRUS PROTECTOR. DUR MAC DOESNT GIVE YOU A REINSTALLATION CD SO IF U FUCK UP U GOTTA GO TO THEIR HORRIBLE IT CENTER.Jesus. Like paying for a Ferrari with a prius engine and interior and 14 inch stock wheels.
Stupid ass 1,200 dollars for a stupid core 2 duo back in 2010. Now its a i3. Still not buying that shit.
and 1,700 for a 15 inch with a i5. SIKE. damn fucking like i12 is coming soon. I could get an 17.3 inch Asus G73Jw for 1700 dollars. It could take a shit on 2 15" mac pros at the same time.anyways im done raging, if you could plz help me out here and get my mp3 to a m4v. if not i'll just go to my friends who have a mac and do it there. But i don't want to go down to that level. I don't even want to touch a mac.
No it has to be in video format.here are the instructions they gave for the "mac" users...
Determine the length of your sound piece and save the piece to your desktop .
Open iMovie .
File -> New Project .
“Name your project and select Widescreen Aspect Ratio Click “Create .
Click the Tile Button “T” located center-right of the screen .
Select and Drag the Title named “Centered” into the timeline located upper-left .
Double click on the added title in the timeline, then type “audio piece” in editing .
window located upper-right, click “Done”
“Control] + Click the title in the timeline select “Set Duration] . Set duration to 60 seconds or the length of your sound piece, whichever is .
shorter then click “OK”
For sound pieces over 60 seconds repeat steps 6-9 until combined titles equal .
the length of your sound piece.
Drag your Sound File from the desktop to the beginning of your timeline ( sound .
file should show up overlapping the titles you have placed there )
…Share -> Export
Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie
• Use: Broadband – High
“Click “Ssave-
ANSWER:
Well, M4V is for MPEG-4 video. M4A is for audio and probably what you're looking for. If it can play M4V or M4A then there's no reason I can think of that would stop it from playing MP4.Convert your audio file from MP3 to AAC in an MP4 container and it should play just fine.
Edit:
M4V is the exact same thing as MP4, just convert your MP3 to MP4 and rename the file extension to M4V. It'll work.

QUESTION:
Alright kids, what do you say my chances are?
Alright, so I was kicked out of my school of 11 years because my academics were sub-par. Yesterday, I tried out for an art school. The woman who was doing my interview was very very clear about the fact that they don't accept incoming 11th graders, and an acceptation would only happen if I had an amazing grade average. My mother was smart enough to "forget" my transcript so she would get a chance to see my portfolio before writing me off because of my grades. When she finally saw my portfolio she seemed very impressed, and afterwards offered to speak with the principal about an available 11th grade spot. Later on I found out that this woman was the hardest to impress in the whole process.So. Do you think I'm in or what? Im pretty much effed otherwise.
In addition, she offered to speak to the principal despite my grades, so she did see the transcript.-

I think you have a great chance!

Should I transfer to an art school for undergrad?
I hate to ask big, life, personal questions through this... but that's exactly what I'm up to lol.So, during my freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh I switched my major to Studio Arts because the idea of doing anything else was unimaginable. ANSWER:
Every art school has a different focus (brand). Some are very technique oriented schools while other choose to place the accent on conceptual development. What one admissions officer from one school thinks is great, another may not be interested in. I think you have some interesting images here and I like your attitude. You seem humble and eager to learn. Here is my advice to you: Apply to your dream school. The very worst that can happen is that you will be declined. Even if you are declined at least you will know that you took your shot. You were brave and dared to dream big. The very best that can happen is that an admissions officer will offer you a scholarship to attend. You never know. Dreams do come true. The only way to find out is to take a small risk and to go into the visual arts field, you have to be a risk taker. No matter how your admissions officer reacts to your work please understand that it has nothing to do with you as a person. Like I said before, much of this process comes down to a question of taste within a program and within an individual. Take your shot. In the long run I promise you won't regret it. If you don't, in the long run, I promise you will always wonder.

QUESTION:
calling all researching whizz kids!?
I'm trying to compile a portfolio for an art PGCE. I cant find any info about what is required for this! what should I include?
should i only include degree level or pre degree and post degree? and should i include other things?-
ANSWER:
If it were my portfolio, I would include the pieces of work that I was most proud of, no matter when they were done.It could even be things you have done for fun - and things you have done for a charity or organisation, rather than just what you have done for your studies.
Try to show a variety of different styles or 'things' - not just pictures of houses, but also 'people' and still lifes, and so on, thus showing what you are capable of.
As this seems to be for learning how to be a teacher, also try to include different mediums, so include drawings, watercolours, clay models and so on. Oh, and you do not have to include the piece of art, you can include photographs! - if you have made a beautiful statue but it is a metre high, there is no way you can include that!
Basically, include a variety of styles and mediums of anything you are proud of, no matter where it came from - as long as you did it, of course!
good luck in your course.

QUESTION:
Architecture Preparation: CAD or art?
I am currently a high school student about to be enrolled in my senior class, planning to pursue a career in architecture. However, I have a few questions about college preparation.I've decided that I want to pursue a Masters in Architecture. However, I'm having trouble deciding on my high school schedule. In preparing for architecture, would it be more useful to sign up for an ROP CAD class, or to enroll in an Advanced Drawing and Painting class?
I have been drawing and painting since I was a kid, and I consider myself exceptionally talented. I plan to submit a portfolio of my art with my college applications as a supplement for majoring in architecture/art (is this a good idea?). But I don't know whether it would benefit me more to also take an Advanced Drawing/Painting class. I have taken no art related classes in high school so far, but I qualify for the advanced class. And I feel like I should. Plus, I remember reading that certain colleges don't care too much whether you are adept at CAD coming into college, since not all colleges use it, you might learn it in college anyways, and that they regard students that can draw and think creatively far more highly than those that know CAD(?). Is this true? Unfortunately, the schedules of the classes do not allow me to take both at the same time.
Thank you so much for the help!
-
ANSWER:
Take the Advanced Drawing and Painting class. For any art-based major or career, my counselors and the director of the art program at my college consistently and constantly tell me that the MOST important thing ANY type of artist should know is how to draw very well. Make sure you have an amazing drawing basis and portfolio by the time you start applying to college. It's true that the more advanced and sophisticated classes involve CAD, and colleges have the necessary tools for a student to appropriately study CAD, so don't worry about that until you get into college. For now, stick to traditional drawing and make sure you're really good at it.It's common knowledge. The stronger your base, the better you'll be when you branch into the specifics of your trade, which will be architecture. I'm an animation major and had little to no experience with CAD, but lots of hours of drawing still lives and figures, and got into the animation program at the college I'm currently attending. Study drawing, and then you'll get to the fancy stuff later.
Good luck!

QUESTION:
What is wrong with kids today?

QUESTION:
Pros & cons of online schooling (high school)?
I'm in the 9th grade & I've been considering online schooling for quite some time now.
I want to switch for many reasons;
-It's less stressful for me. I tend to stress very easily.
-School is hellish for me because I'm picked on a lot. I don't make friends very easily. No, I'm not some anti-social, just an FYI.
-I'll have more time to focus on building my art portfolio for the art school I plan to go to after graduation.
-I'm on my laptop enough as it is, I don't see why not.
-I actually used to do online schooling back in 4th grade & honestly, my grades were a lot better than what they were in 3rd & 5th.
-& many more reasons. (these are the most basic ones)I plan to finish my freshman year of high school & give online school a shot again. What are the pros & cons of online school? Most importantly; is it harder to get into a college if you do online schooling rather than traditional school?
By the way, if I DO end up doing online schooling, I still plan to attend SOME classes back at school such as choir & art. My school allows kids to take 1 or 2 classes there while the rest they learn at home.
And please, you guys... Don't give me an answer like, "I know high school is tough & you're a freshman, it will get better soon!" because that's not the case at all. I've always done horribly in school my whole life, both academically & socially.
Answers are much appreciated & thanks in advance!-
ANSWER:
Homeschooler Chelsea Link feared she might not get into any top schools. She got into seven:
http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2008/apr/18/news/chi-homeschool_18apr18Then there are Micki and David Colfax, who homeschooled their three (four?) boys, and all of them went on to Harvard (and this was back in the 1980s, when homeschooling was even more unusual than it is today). Their book, “Homeschooling for Excellence,” describes their homeschooling adventure. There’s also Kerry Anderson, a student who spent her middle- and high-school career riding across the country in the cab of her mom’s big rig and homeschooling. A recruiter from Harvard came looking for her in 2007. She graduated from Harvard in 2010, and plans to continue to law school:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128674314You might also want to read Cafi Cohen's book, “And What about College? : How Homeschooling Leads to Admissions to the Best Colleges and Universities.”
So where to start? Find the website of a college you might be interested in, and do a search for “homeschool,” and see if it comes up with anything. MANY colleges and universities have a page dedicated to admissions policies in regard to homeschoolers.
Most, if not all colleges, will also want to see SAT and/or ACT scores. You’ll need to be careful of watching for the deadline on those, to make sure you take them when you need to. They will also want a few letters of recommendation (you can get those from anyone who might be able to speak to your academic life; perhaps outside teachers and/or mentors, a Scout leader, that type of thing), and A TRANSCRIPT.
What about a diploma???
Nope. Diplomas are essentially useless. Face it, there’s a huge variety of high school diplomas, just like there’s a huge variety of high schools. I’ve known people who had high school diplomas and couldn’t read! Aside from that, every state has different requirements and standards when it comes to earning a high school diploma. That’s why when you apply to a college IN state (as opposed to out-of-state), they are more likely to take your diploma and GPA into account. If you apply out-of-state, they rely more heavily on your ACT and SAT scores. Also remember that the kid who took a slew of AP classes and held office in student council and a number of clubs got the same diploma as the kid who squeaked by with a C average taking woodshop, auto mechanics and art. The only way the colleges can tell the difference between these students is to know what classes they took. The list of classes, and the grades obtained for each, is your TRANSCRIPT. Those things are worth their weight in gold!!!
So you’ll want to carefully keep record of what you’re learning, and how much time you spend on it. A portfolio of your work wouldn’t hurt, either.
Lots of homeschooled kids take college courses while they're in high school. (High schools call this “dual enrollment.”) By the time they graduate from high school, they have an Associates Degree and then they transfer to the university of their choice. Not all of them do that, but many do. The only caveat on that is that it COULD affect your financial aid in the future, so it would be worth checking on that aspect.

QUESTION:
My art practice is replaced by household chores?
My wife is putting my art practice in the toilet?
I am an artist and part time art professor. Since my wife got pregnant (our daughter is now 16 months old) my art career vanished completely. I haven't completed one drawing or painting. My art practice has turned into a career that doesn't really exist in my wife's (or her family's) eyes. Every time I try to get a chunk of time to work in the studio somebody jumps in with an emergency or I have to take care of my daughter. Now I am supposed to present a portfolio to the school I teach for and I have a big zero where 2 years of work should be. Today my wife is going to London for 3 days and leaving our daughter with me (her Mom is coming to help but that just makes more work for me). This is pretty normal routine. If it's not London it's something else. I get 7 hours of studio work time each day. This started this week. So far I have spent the majority of that time cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning and doing laundry. My wife doesn't help. She just comes home to play with our daughter. I thought this would be a great time for me to work but my daughter needs a clean house, healthy food, and clean clothes. It is really strange to realize that you can't just say "well, if you don't want to clean the house then I won't either!" With a child in the house that argument doesn't work. But I don't know how to make my wife see my situation. When I cook, clean and do the household chores during my work time she sees it as my choice. I tried going on strike once and she ended up feeding my daughter cheese dip and grapes for dinner and after 2 days flies were swarming in the kitchen. I couldn't dress my daughter appropriately because she didn't have clothes. How do I make her grow up?! I need some tactic to make her realize that life changes when you have a kid. That you have to do certain things that we thought were stupid before we had kids. I remember looking down on my Mom for doing so much cooking and cleaning and saying "
Yeah, I will never do that!" But you have too! Kids need stuff. My wife is still saying "Yeah, that slave work is not for me!" But that means I do it. What the hell? What do I do?-
ANSWER:
'Every time I try to get a chunk of time to work in the studio somebody jumps in with an emergency or I have to take care of my daughter.'
That's what happens when you have kids. Diapers don't change themselves. Kids can't feed themselves. Those are a fathers job too. Painting is a hobby. Fatherhood isn't.

QUESTION:
how do I become known as a kid artist?
I am 13 and I love to make finished art work for people. I make artwork for my school, my prodjects and try to make everything I do a piece of art. I really want to have greater challenges and it seams the only art jobs are for adults. I want to put together a great portfolio and want my art to go somewhere. Basically I just want some challenges that push me to work hard for others. does anyone have ideas?-
ANSWER:
You know... Age is a factor.. but I'd recommend watching an online training session with Bryan Peterson - he will teach you tips and tricks to putting together a portfolio, how to interview and other things that many adults don't do well when they are first starting out in the design & arts field. QUESTION:
does this sound too impersonal? please help, its for a scholarship..just 5 minutes from your day?
how has art impacted your life and how do you plan to use art in your future?Growing up, art was always something that just came to me. Relatives and friends would express their interest by telling me I should pursue a career in something art related. After careful contemplation, I rationalized that establishing a career on a subjective talent so fluid was foolish. Just like singing and dancing, art was a leisure pursuit that entailed tough competition because almost anyone was capable of applying it. That was when I decided a career in the medical field would be most fitting. I would have job security and the ability to avoid any ridicule that might accompany my work. As a freshman in high school my schedule was full academic courses that were sure to indicate the dedication I had to becoming a doctor. Projects would come up and people would comment on how “artsy” I was, and I would brush it off as if I had no idea what they were talking about. Sophomore and junior year flew by with the same deposition as my freshman year. I had committed my entire high school career to strictly academic courses, ensuring myself that all the hard work would pay off. I’d see kids in the hallway carrying art portfolios and I couldn’t help but feel envious; like I was supposed to be doing that. For years I prayed for an epiphany. I always imagined myself having an “a-hah!” moment in the middle of class. My problem was, I was discounting all along a gift that God had given me. My senior year, I dropped out of the health academy to pursue the passion I had denied for too long-art. Taking an art class changed everything for me. There was a claming effect that made sense, as if this is what I was meant to be doing the whole time. What was once before this world that I just existed in, with this sedentary life, now become this world that had value, texture, form, space, shape, line, and color. Every year I work at a local camp and teach art to young children. From this experience, I believe I have found my niche in life. They say if you love your job you’ll never have to work a day in your life. I found that through art. After much consideration, I’ve decided that I want to
Any help you can give would be much appreciated!
-
ANSWER:
It's not impersonal at all Jennifer; it gives a clear picture of how important art is to you. I can't think of any improvements to the content, but I did find a couple of things that I would word differently.
"My senior year, I dropped out...." Would read better as "During my senior year...."
"What was once before this world that I just existed in, with this sedentary life, now become this world that had value, texture, form, space, shape, line, and color." A world.... is better than this world....I don't understand what you mean by deposition here, but it may be that it's an American usage and I'm Australian.
"Sophomore and junior year flew by with the same deposition as my freshman year."Minor typos; it's always difficult proof-reading your own work, because you see what you know is meant to be there.
"my schedule was full academic courses" You left out "of"
claming when you meant calmingI hope that helps, and best of luck with your scholarship application.

QUESTION:
help me fulfill my dream?
ok, I really want to go to college to become a graphic designer/ visual communicator and someday be a creative director for an advertising company, perhaps even own my one or work for a magazine, and then someday get enough money to organize a foundation that helps out kids without parents in america and help people who can't afford to pay their own college educationI am a junior in high school and I kinda feel like I don't have right now what it takes to get into a design school such as NC state school of arts, or wake forest art school, or NYU, and I would really love to study at any of those schools
but right now I am just sooo stressed and confused, I am trying to figure out my life and trying to see how I can go about realizing my dreams
I would love to get a Nikon d40 and do some photography or perhaps a mac book pro, but right now I don't have the money to do that, I have been working on photoshop and am getting pretty good at using the program, but however I still feel like I have nothing for an art portfolio, this is why I was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas on what I can do to make a portfolio or what I can use instead of a mac or a nikon d40 so cheaper easier alternatives
any tips or ideas will be very much appreciated, some tips for my long time goals/ dreams would also be helpful, but for now if you have some advice on how I could get a portfolio going without all the resources, that would mean the world to me
Thanks.guy with the rude comment, trust me I have the grades to get into basically any school in the nation, I've already been requested by yale, however, it isn't for what I want to study- graphic arts
so please don't answer if you are going to be rude

QUESTION:
whats a good GPA for high school freshman?
im going to a really nice private high school. its really competitive.. students and teachers are always competing for higher spots. (im a public school kid at heart!)
my gpa right now is a 4. im in english honors, geometry, and art 1. i had to apply and sent in a portfolio for art to get accepted, and i had to write essays and take tests to get into honors. im trying really hard! I was wondering if my gpa is good? thank you!-
ANSWER:
You have a 4.0? I don't think it can get any higher than that...well, in my school, a 4.0 is the highest it can be. That would mean that you have straight As in every class for each semester.
You sound smart, so I would strive to keep that 4.0 if I were you. Don't lower your standards at all, because the second you do, your GPA will go lower. Keep high standards for yourself.
I'm a Junior in high school, and I still have my 4.0 GPA. It was a long and hard road (and I still have this year and next year to go), but it's worth it. I didn't let myself lower the standards at all.
Good luck!

QUESTION:
Uncertain Future: please help?
I'm looking for advice, because at the moment I'm feeling so lost and of late I've been extremely depressed..I turned 20 a few weeks ago.
As a high-school student, I received excellent marks, took challenging classes, and won awards. I wanted to pursue a career in Art, because that had always been my life-long passion. Unfortunately, I did not have the courage nor the encouragement from my parents and peers, so I did not pursue it for fear of financial instability.
I ended up going to a community college after high-school due to financial issues, and to put it bluntly, I was very unmotivated, ashamed, and unsure of what I wanted to do with life. My parents' expectations kept getting higher and higher, and they kept putting me down and comparing me to their friends' kids, who all seemed to be doing remarkably well. It's a poor excuse, but as a result of these negative feelings, I ended up getting extremely poor grades with poor attendance. My social life plummeted. I tried to challenge myself by signing up for more classes, but due to severe budget cuts, I was unable to get more than 3 classes per semester.. all of which I did poorly in. It was nearly impossible scheduling an appointment with the college counselors, and the lines were incredibly long. Part of the reason why I ended up ditching my classes is because I felt almost undeserving to even attend them; I felt very uncomfortable in large groups. I understand that these are all part of my record now, and I feel as though I will be saddled with them for the rest of my life.
It's been about 2 years since I graduated high-school.
At this point, I am extremely eager to make a new start. I've finally mustered up the courage to pursue a career in Art, but I lack a plan because nobody seems willing to give me guidance. This is something that I've been wanting for all of my life, and it took me 2 years to get off of my ass and decide to reach for it. It's a real shame that I wasted 2 years, but I've made a complete turn-around with my mindset and I'm determined to make up for those stagnant years.I still need to create a portfolio, and there's a small center that's opening up near my home that specializes in the creation of art portfolios for transfers to different art colleges/universities. I'm extremely eager to start going there, but it isn't opened yet. The building is set up, but there's nobody inside of it at the present moment.
Somebody suggested that I should just drop out of college and begin afresh, but I'm not sure how that works or if that will be beneficial for me; I'm just so in the dark about everything and I feel like everything is passing by while I'm standing still. If it's possible, I'd like to just stop going to college and take up a job or two while working on my portfolio, but I'm worried that my horrible community-college records will prevent me from going anywhere at all.
I'm basically at a standstill without any idea of what to do; my goal is to attend an art institution and pursue what I love the most. It's definitely my One Thing (I hope you know what I mean), and I don't want to lose sight of it, or I know I shall regret it for the rest of my life.
Suggestions/Personal experiences/advice would be very, very appreciated.. my family disapproves of what I am about to do, but I'm determined to strike out on my own. It's my life, after all. I just don't get advice from my loved ones, so I thought I'd look for some here.
Thank you very, very, much.
The worst bit is that my parents don't know what I'm doing, only that I know what I want to do. Their expectations are high and they're constantly criticizing me and comparing me to other people, so I feel discouraged to talk to them about what's going on in my life. They have no idea about my failing grades.Yes, it's irresponsible, but at the moment, I feel like it cannot be helped.. my father is a trucker that is always out for weeks on end, and he comes back to a home that is extremely dysfunctional, so it breaks his heart whenever just -one- thing is out of place/not idealistically perfect. My unemployed mother has a tumor in her breast and she has ailing health.. the last time she heard bad news, she had to stay at the hospital to recover from her shock. I don't know how to break it out to them.
Thanks for your time.
-
ANSWER:
You should do what you love, you need to talk to your parents and tell them exactly how you feel and what you like to do. If you need to come up with your own finances then check student loan programs so that you can do it on your own and your parents don't have to carry the burden.

I wouldn't worry about having SLR cameras and the latest macbooks (although they are gorgeous)When I started out I was in a similar situation to you, unable to afford top notch software and gear, with no portfolio.
Emerge yourself in graphic arts, keep your eyes open, notice what trends are in, start to notice what is good / bad design.
You say you have photoshop - that is plenty to get started! Offer to do some free design work for local charities / businesses, then you work gets out into the world, and then slowly by word of mouth you become known...it's hard work, you just have to get your work out there by any means!
All the best!

QUESTION:
How IMPORTANT is AP English?
I took AP English my Junior Year and managed to get an A and A- over the two semesters. It was alot of work. At my school English classes are a significant workload.I'm seriously considering taking Honors English next year, because of the rest of my class schedule and my Extracurriculars. I do a significant amount of work for extracurriculars. I'm creating and Art Portfolio, Editor in Chief for Design and Art in the Yearbook, I run two Humanitarian/Tolerance clubs at school, an active member of Model UN, and working on my own business called Art for Humanity.
Thus, AP English is really not something I am interested in taking again next year. I will be taking AP European History, AP Calculus BC, AP Art History, and either AP Physics and Regular Economics or AP Economics and Advanced Honors Physics II. I'm still deciding on the last two courses (Recommend if you have advice)
Anyways I'm looking to apply to Ivy league schools. My dream is Princeton. I know this is a far reality for most kids. But could anyone leave any advice on course selection, and specifically how important is it for me to add AP English Literature in my schedule. I just don't want to sacrifice the grades of my other classes.
-
ANSWER:
AP English is really good prep for college and colleges like to see that you continue challegning yourself in consistent subjects. AP European and AP art history are really similar classes so I would only take one and the put in AP English, that way you would have a smaller work load

QUESTION:
Do I have a chance at Duke at all ?!?
I have about a 3.5 GPA at a VERY competitive school (ranked 107 in the country), and my SATs are average at 1490 (extremely low I know). But I have 5 APs under my belt, and almost taken ALL honors/advance everywhere else in my high school career. (currently a senior)Extracurricular include:
- National Arts Honor Society Re-elected President (11th and 12th grade year)
- "Local" Museum's Vice-Chairperson for their Teen Council Board - I want to intern at Nasher's Musuem of Art at Duke
- Vice President of the National Honors Society
- Member of Future Educators Of America ( we spent atlas 20 hours mentoring/tutor kids in community that need help)
- Part of Committee on FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) where I get to plan out events and compete in competitions.
- Volunteer at a Community Wildlife Preservation center for 4 years (100+ hours)
- A Peer Mediatior at School - help fellow peers resolve problems and life issues
- Advocate Volunteer at many community services all around (more than I can think of right now)
- AND Winner of some prestigious Art awards state wise and Nationally.BTW, also submitting in my Art portfolio that has won state and possibly national recognition.
So what are my chances if I attend such a prestigious school and stuff? Will my SAT and slightly lower GPA count me out? (my school is where almost EVERYTHING is honors already - very challenging environment)
I am also Malaysian - someone told me I'm a URM?
And I speak Chinese and Malay (English was 3rd language)-
ANSWER:
Big deal, my school is ranked 21 in the nation (just thought I'd let you know). You'll definitely have to fix that SAT. Try to understand that colleges don't solely pay attention to test scores. Just try to come across as an ideal student in your application essay. Your extra-curriculars look pretty good.

QUESTION:
If your toddler-aged sibling broke something expensive of yours, would you expect your parents to pay for it?
**** I apologize in advance that this is long and a bit rambling / ranty. If you think it's too long, you're not obligated to answer it, but if you do, please don't just complain about the length. Thanks. ****My two-year-old brother accidentally dropped my brand-new Macbook Pro laptop on the kitchen floor, and now there's a very noticeable dent on it, and the laptop will not power on. I'm bringing it into the Apple store on Monday to have them check it out, but I'm not very optimistic that it's fixable without it costing a fortune. I do have the Apple Care extended warranty, but it doesn't include accidental damage.
I asked my parents and stepdad to help pay for whatever costs there might be with fixing or replacing the laptop, and they said no because I shouldn't have left it in access of a toddler. Usually I never would, but these circumstances were very unusual. I don't live with my mom, stepdad and their kids (including the toddler) most of the time because of a health problem that caused my immune system to be weak, so I have to limit my access to children. My dad and stepmom are currently out of town, and I've been at our house on my own this week, and was perfectly content there. He had wanted me to stay with my mom over the weekend because there was this special event on the beach going on right near our house until three in the morning, and he didn't think I should be there on my own with a massive crowd of random people parking on our street and all the noise and traffic chaos involved. Meh. However, I didn't think I *had* to stay with her. I thought that was just a request. I had a doctor's appointment in my mom's neighborhood yesterday, then headed home, and on the way there listened to a voice mail my dad had left about me staying with my mom that made it seem like I really didn't have a choice after all. So, I had to go all the way to our house, take care of the pets, pack up, then head all the way back over to my mom's, and this was during Friday afternoon traffic hell in LA. The doctor's appointment had included blood tests, and I was feeling weak and miserable, and the heat wave and traffic made me feel much, much worse. As soon as I got to her house, I took my laptop out of my bag to find some medicine underneath it, then had some juice and went upstairs. Yes, I should have brought my laptop with me, but I was taking up my backpack, art portfolio, and a ton of other stuff, and I was tired. I was just going to put it all away then come back down and grab the laptop. I ended up just crashing for a bit because I was that exhausted. While I was asleep the nanny and the kids came home, and she set them up at the counter to make a snack. I have no idea why she didn't just pick up my laptop and move it to another area first. She had to have seen it there since my brother was seated in the chair right next to it. I don't know what exactly happened, but apparently he tried to pick it up and it slipped out of his hands and fell on the floor. I woke up, came down stairs and freaked out. The nanny was just like "omg, so sorry!" and that's about it; my mom, stepdad & dad just blamed me for leaving the laptop out; I feel screwed over.
This couldn't have come at a worse time because I'm participating in a festival event tomorrow, and a ton of my work was on there and hadn't yet been ported to my MyMobile so I had to pull an all-nighter to redo everything, and it's still not done. I feel like I've been penalized enough for this small mistake.
I didn't even want to stay here, but did so just to try to make my parents happy, and none of this would have happened if they had just let me be. Normally I am not so scatterbrained as to leave my laptop out, and I am very responsible with my belongings, but I was completely spent at the time I put it down. Plus my brothers can't even reach that counter on their own. An adult has to help them into the chairs, and so an adult could have easily moved the laptop out of their reach first.
I don't have 00 lying around to replace the laptop, and I donated my old one earlier this week. My parents could very easily pay it without breaking a sweat, so this is just so unreasonable and unfair to me. If your young sibling broke something belonging to you, would you expect your parents to be responsible for repairing or replacing it if they could afford to do so?
This is just really, really harsh. The doctor's appointment had to do with a followup my cancer. A lot of blood was taken, and I'd fasted before hand. Of course I wasn't going to behave as responsibly as normal in that condition.-
ANSWER:
OMG for once I agree with one of your whining rants! You left the laptop on the counter top which would hardly be considered within the normal range of a 2 yo. I suspect the nanny didn't move it because she was also tired and trying to feed 2 hungry 2 yos. Also she may not have really known what it was and that it would strike their interest - most laptops are not exciting looking. It seems highly uncharacteristic of your mum and step dad not to pay for their toddler's damages. They must still be PO'ed over your I'm an adult campaign. Go park your car in a medium bad neighborhood with the laptop in plain view. Someone will steal it and you can collect on the insurance. It's that or small claims court. And not to rub it in but remember what I said about my cheap Dell. I've dropped it on the floor, including the concrete garage floor, many times and it still runs like a charm.

QUESTION:
Do you think i should keep doing art?
Well i just finished my first year in Art college. its not a great one :/ i just go to a public school named VCU, went pretty far in Final Four tho
anyways idk if im artist material or if i even really truely enjoy doing this and im not really sure if it is or not. But if keep questioning it and having difficulty making up reasons why i should continue than its starting to feel like its not it.
Or maybe its beacuse im lazy, but to tell you the details of everything and my life would take a long time. But just by telling u these things u can probably peice together what type of person i am. Deep down i care about my parents alot but never show it. Imagine the little loser kid who gets beat on but in a Athletic and healthy body and the frustrations of not being able to do anything or talk to somebody because ppl im close too can't understand and lack of communication, an epic fail to myself with nobody to blame. A nice simple minded kid who can count the times he got drunk with just 2 hands, and smoking in 1. But im not the shy and quiet type.
Here is my Portfolio from 2010-2011.
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.392028894704.158696.751884704&l=27d5ca069f&type=1
plz critique it, tell me what u like but if u are disgusted feel free to be as harsh as you like. Trust me, u won't hurt my feeling.
If u feel like i should give art a chance. ( im going into Communication arts Dep. ) Than please give me some guidance.
If u feel like i should quit art, let me know.
Ur answers won't heavily change my choice on whether i should continue or quit. But you might give me something to think about for a little while longer.
Thanks guys, appreciate it.
Oh here is an additional peiceits a 1 minute video from my class, a Stop motion. I made this video public to everybody so u can critique this as well as if its part of the portfolio.

QUESTION:
OCADU or George Brown for Graphic Design?
So I am a grade 12 student who is very passionate about graphic design. I also love fine arts but my heart lies with GD. So i applied to numerous places but my top 2 choices are OCADU and George Brown.OCADU
I FREAKING LOVE THIS SCHOOL!! <3 i've been there numerous times, open house, portfolio clinics etc, and i love it. I love the environment, the passion in the air, the people and the faculty that I have met (except for one lady >.<). I am one of those quirky art kids so ill fit right in i believe... I have friends in the GD program and they say they love it. And I am sure its awesome... but im not sure if an education there will land me a job after graduating... btw I am all for the starving artist, im not giving up my passion to be financially sound. but still I need food on the table :) I have heard many success stories though about people coming out of this program, one of my cousins friends works with Nike and is making a killing.George Brown
I find this school more businessy... and I hate the St. James Campus its like a daycare... and the lighting! its depressing! it makes me wanna fall asleep... but I know the program is really good. I sometimes think if I go there I have a higher chance of getting employed... but i hate the campus so much...***SIDE QUESTION*** does OCAD and/or George Brown offer co-op? im pretty sure GB does... not sure bout OCAD, I think I read something on their site but I don't seem to remember.
So I would like to hear your opinions on which school is better... and I know as of just recently OCAD's design area sucked donkey nuts but now they upgraded BIG TIME and I hear it is amazing and hi-tech!
THANKS!!!!!

QUESTION:
Career advice from Graphic Designers please! What should I do?
I want to start looking for a new job but, I feel like I've lost all my creativity to design. I have a few regrets about it now, but at the time I got a lot out of the Tech College I went to. I graduated 3 years ago with an Associates Degree and got a job right away doing production art. I figured it would be a good start to get a quick 2-3 years experience here and then get a better design job. Well that 3 years went by pretty quick and now I realize I feel so far behind everyone, even kids just graduating. I forgot what little web design I once new, I don't know Adobe InDesign, and I can't even draw anymore. I think that once I get back in a creative environment it will come back to me, but can I go into a interview with the same portfolio I graduated with or do I go back to school? or what? I need advice, I gotta get out of this boring dead-end job. I know I'm not the only one to go through this.
All good answers, thank you! CrazzyChk, I actually just picked up Caffeine for the Creative Mind, It's sitting right next to me right now, That's Crazzy!
Anyways, I guess I knew it was my fault for falling into the slump and I know what I have to do. I just wanted to whine a little bit and see if there were other people going through the same thing.-
ANSWER:
You must be willing to work on your own time. There is no excuse for your falling behind except for your own lack of trying, or realization that you should be.You don't know indesign? Learn it. If you use other Adobe products, and you know Quark, then it will come to you quickly and easily. The more programs you know, the more you are worth. There are books that can teach you programs more quickly and cheaper then school ever could, and since this is a field where the tools are continuously being upgraded, it is our job to keep up to date with the most current tools.
Spend your free time brushing up on your drawing and creative ideas, upgrading your portfolio, and researching where you want to take your career. I wouldn't bother with web design - it's lousy pay and mostly lead by programmer types these days, but that's your prerogative of course. Have you looked into the different directions your knowledge can take you?
Unfortunately in the GD field most jobs are dead-end. You must be very good or very lucky to ever get rich off of it. I'm lucky because I don't need vast amounts of wealth to be happy, but I do need to enjoy my job.

QUESTION:
I'm having trouble concentrating, and I really need help?
I have an essay due tonight, for an online course, on everything I'm not interested in. It's basically on plate tectonics, and all this other Earth mumbo jumbo; I have to prove that continents were once together to form one giant land mass. I'm so uninterested, and so distracted, I've been on the introduction for 3 hours. The reason I'm distracted is because I've decided where I want to go for University, and I have to get a portfolio together... I'm an art kid, not a science kid. I need to go to school to upgrade my English, though I've already graduated high school... and in order to go to school, I need to take 3 courses... this is one. I can't focus. I really, really can't. I'm going crazy.
Should I just give up the grade for this assignment, or should I BS it? Or... how can I focus? This is killing me. I really just want to draw.
-
ANSWER:
Everybody faces this type of problem with concentration. We have to face it. There is no other go.Only thing we can pay full attention. Be fully aware of the importance and consequences. And not allow any temptations to deviate from our main area of work.

QUESTION:
Is this how Drawing I should be? Should I drop the course?
Okay, so I'd like to maybe transfer to an Art School for Animation, and all the school I've seen require and art portfolio made of mostly still lives and things draw as accurately to real life as possible. So I thought that I definitely needed to take an art class to learn how to really do that stuff. (because I don't like doing it personally and don't know any methods or anything)
So I started Drawing I. Which maybe was the wrong class? Maybe I was suppose to take Life Drawing instead to learn what I'm looking for or something...
Basically, it's the OPPOSITE of what I was looking for. On the second day, the teacher picked up the text for the class that had a pretty ordinary (realistic) profile on the cover and started to verbally bash it. "This... This is TRASH! It's just AWFUL! LOOK AT THIS! I can't even look at it! You have no idea how much I hate this picture!" He stresses us to draw each stroke with ridiculously messy thick lines that go really thin and soft. He had us all draw busts of each other, and then hangs them on one wall and goes one by one critiquing them harshly and forcing us to pick favorites. He rewarded one girl who randomly decided to add pinstripes to this guys sleeves (which clearly weren't there.) And he corrects us constantly for leaning on the table, and was harsh on one kid who did just that, because the lines in his drawing came out neat and uniform. Which is apparently a problem?
I ended up getting in a bit of a fight with him during class, I'm not even sure what I was arguing about, he just upset me so much I just popped. He was nice enough to take me aside after class and show me a method for what I was looking for. (He said if you attach a piece of paper the same size as what you're drawing on to your pencil, probably so that you can't look down, and only look at your subject, and try to draw the edges, moving your eyes and pencil together, that would help me)
It's great that he took me aside to show me that he respects what I'd like to learn, but at the same time, the entire class as a whole is focused on the opposite thing.
Should I drop the class? We're only in our second week, I can still get a half refund... I just don't know whether this will benefit me.
Also he claimed that what I was talking about wasn't 'drawing' it was 'drafting'.-
ANSWER:
I'm enrolled in Drawing I at a community college and it is NOTHING like that. We started out with a perspective assignment, we just finished a still life of simple boxes and cylinders, next we're doing a little bit more complicated still life and starting to work on shadows. Our lesson plan seems very consecutive. All still lifes, graduating in difficulty.
It sounds like your instructor has taken some liberties. I would drop the course and maybe try a different teacher. I've recently started using ratemyprofessors.com and have found it helpful.

QUESTION:
Where am I going wrong with girls?
On paper: I have a great family and a good relationship with both my parents. I see the importance of spirituality but never crammed religion down anyones throat. I'm well educated but never thought less of someone that hadn't graduated from college (my last GF went to culinary school for a year). I have a great job that affords me so much and I'm extremely grateful. For the most part I try to remain humble, I make about 0,000 at 27 (I'm not really old) and its really hard not to have a K Rolex. And I DON'T work on Wall St. either, all of its honest. In my last relationship I was extremely supportive of her ambitions helping with resumes and art portfolios. I like taking out the trash and making the bed. I'm not weird about kids, I like them a lot nor am I scared of commitment. I like sports, but could watch Cake Boss over a Yankee game. I'm not boring; I just traveled to Paris and Spain for 2 weeks only planning the trip 3 days before I left. Looks - are really subjective, but I'm about 5'7", blue eyes, brown hair thats short (not blad), athletic, I mountain bike and run, eat well, slightly big nose (in my eyes) but everyone says it suits me. Think a clean cut Charlie Day and a taller Tom Cruise. I like Diesel jeans a pair of chucks and a T shirt, but own a few tailored italian suits and like to dress up for an occasion. I'm a charmer in a tux too- what my old GF's mother told me. Weirdest thing about me I think is I'm left handed. Good teeth too, all straight and white. I like dogs, really don't care for cats. I feel like I slipped threw the cracks and I'm dating all the screwed up girls that are left overs.... And I've never been bitter about it until now. Where am I going wrong?
Maybe I miss represented myself the first time "Normal food at normal restaurants?" Where did I say I only ate black caviar and drank Kopi Luwak coffee (google it)? I love bacon cheeseburgers and dunkin donuts. I don't own a Rolex, its hard not to buy one though; maybe that's my problem I don't flash myself around.... like a Jr. Scott Disick. Also Internet dating is not for me. Part of me likes the charm of the old world and if I have to pick a GF off a site like a pair of shoes from Zappos (think about that really; you see photos, you read descriptions, you pay for it and you pick out what you want, they're about the same thing). I'd be resentful. And lastly, expensive clothes? I see people everyday running around in NYC with 0+ Antique denim, I live my life debt free and have Jeans that look like Levis, maybe they're more money but I don't owe on them and you'd never know if you met me. I do include my significant other on my spontaneous trips which can get expensive, but thats-
ANSWER:
If you're income is among the first qualities you mention, you'll land a gold digger any one of these days.Things to consider:
- How many hours do you work a week to earn that pay? Girls want you to value them over your job.
- Besides buying yourself needlessly expensive watches and vacations, how broadly do you share your wealth? Girls like to be given nice but thoughtful gifts and they like to see guys give generous tips at restaurants and give to charities, etc.
- Do other people see you as humble or is it just you? Living an expensive lifestyle and having expensive clothes and accessories is not what most people see as humble. Try living like a normal guy and not bringing up your job and eat normal food at normal restaurants.

QUESTION:
how do you deal with a termpermental dad!? :'(?
hi guys, my dad is the best dad in the world, but when he gets angry he yells like he's not tomorrow.. he's sacrificed so much of his life for his kids, and he's caring and considerate and kind and intelligent, all the good things, and he really loves me and wants the best for me, but he's a persian dad, meaning he's very authoritative! i've been trying to get into architecture, and b/c of his innacurate pushy advice i put the kind of art in my portfolio that made me not get in.. i'm mad about that, but when i still respect him enough to ask his advice yet again, he gets mad, saying "well EVERYTHING I SUGGEST YOU'VE ALREADY DONE, THEN WHY DO YOU ASK FOR MY ADVICE!? YOU DON'T LISTEN WHEN PEOPLE TALK TO YOU", and he's very condescending, and rude, he talks me down, and says stuff like stand up straight, take your hands out of your pockets, and i'm NOT even beind defiant! so i yelled back saying if he's gonna treat me like that i don't want to hear it, and now i'm worried i went too far..-
ANSWER:
My father is kinda like that too. The best father in the world but sometimes he comes back from work really angry... but hey my advice: ALWAYS respect your father, DO NOT yell back at him, this will bring you nowhere. If he yells at you, just say ok and ignore it. And I know sometimes everything about you seems to be a problem (stand straight) but that part too just say ok and after ignore it, because even if you do that well, there will always be something wrong. Tell him you love him often. This doesn't mean you have to start acting like a slave to him, still be yourself because if you start saying yes and sorry to absolutely everything, he will only feel like he can get angry at you whenever he wants to. But please, don't be rude to your father. Best thing to do is talk to him when there is a problem. Good luck

QUESTION:
How can I go to university in Europe?
Okay, so heres the story: I realized that since I have an Italian passaport, I could probably go to college in Europe. I may not have all the same benefits as European residents, but ill probably get more benefits than most of my fellow classmates studying in the us (plus i wont have to pay the really ridiculus tuition rates they make you pay at american schools).
so yeah, how can I do this? do i have to take any tests (like the european equivalent to the ACT/SAT)? How hard are admissions? What kinds of portfolios do they require? Where are the universities free (like in what countries)? Is teh Erasmus program available in ANY college in europe? Also, ive realized that for most european schools have two rounds of studies, the first is three years, the second is two. Is the three year one the equivalent to your undergraduate, and the two is the equivalent to your graduates, or do you have to do both in order to get your undergraduates?
and what schools would be good for me to go to?Some facts that might be good to keep in mind:
-im going to study studio art
-i wanna be an artist
-i only want to go to colleges in big, artsy, liberal cities
-im a lesbian, so i want to go somewhere that wont be homophobic AT ALL (seriously, im not gonna put up wiht that shit in college)
-my gpa is probably around 3.3
-im argentinian (and i have an argentinian passaport)
-i live in the us with my family (i have a greencard)
-im temporarily living in mexico as a foreign exchange student
-im completely bilingual (in spanish and english)
-ive taken french in high school so i know a little bit of that
-im thinking about having a side carreer as an interpreter, since im more interested in that than doing commercial art and i need something to pay the bills
-i want to have a really really amazing portfolio (im taking college level art classes, so it will probably be better than most kids). ive been working on my portfolio since the beginning of sophomore year.
-i would rather go to a school where i just have to pay international fees and housing (so tuition free places)sooo yeah... help?
oh, and BTW so youll know what kind of school i want to go to. In the US, im going to apply to tyler (temple u), mica, pratt, parsons, cooper union, and (maybe) cca. of all the universities that ive checked out in europe, i liked the university of the arts in berlin, and l'ecole de beaux arts in paris.
BTW THANKS!!!
-
ANSWER:
I am not sure where you go to school, but International tuition is far higher than tuition at home. Also, there are no grants or work-study for you, Americans almost never get scholarships abroad, and you will have to take out multiple loans in addition to the fact that you cannot work to support yourself. Europe is a continent, not a country, so you cannot say anything about Europe in general, all of the regions are very different, Scandinavia is nothing like the Balkins, etc. So every country is going to be different as far as what they require, and schools are all different inside of the country as well. International students have the same rights in the UK as they do in America, and this goes for most of Western Europe, so if you do not like America don't get your hope up, we have cities that are similar in the environment that you are looking for.Europe has a better educational system then is existent in the Western hemisphere, so you will be working harder there. If you already know where you want to go to school why don't you look on their admissions websites and ask them what they require? International fees? There are no International fees, just jacked up tuition, and art school tuition is very high anyway, which is a rip off because they are in the lowest paying field in the country, actually fine arts is 10th from the bottom, education, drama, theology, and social work were among the lower. So you just have to be realistic, there are only a handful of schools in America that charge International students the same tuition that they charge In-state, and none of them are art schools. You have already picked your schools, so you have to read from them what they charge. True art schools are private, they do not get federal funding and therefor charge high tuition to pay for everything. What you are looking for does not exist. Interpreters in America have to have a certificate, that takes a year of college classes so you have to consider that when you are thinking about your side job.
I don't mean to be discouraging, I just want you to realize what you are looking at. For art school you are talking about 30,000 a year for home students, and the international rate for private schools will be even higher. The biggest cities will be best about not being homophobic, but again, cities cannot be summarized, there are different areas and some will be alright while others will be discriminatory. Europe will generally be better. Also, you need a VISA to study abroad, and sometimes if you have a passport they will not change it over to a study pass, so check with the consulate.

QUESTION:
Why can't I get a job?
I am 31 years old and I am Colombian. I got married with a U.S citizen at the end of 2009. Before that I studied Visual Arts (5 years studies) back in my country in one of the best universities over there I graduated in Aug. 2004. I worked for 2 years as an English Art Teacher for Kids between 4 and 16, meaning I taught them english through art workshops. I was an english tutor and an independent artist. I was beginning my career exhibiting in some important national shows over there, and I was getting known through some magazines and publications featuring my pieces, all of these at my country. Besides that I used to work as a freelancer doing graphic design, photography for publications and as an english-spanish interpreter (I worked on call for a company who brought bands as Iron Maiden and Jamiroquai so I would be the interpreter of the musicians or their staff).I got married for love, and left my family, my friends and my career in order to be with my American husband, he wanted us to live in the U.S. My last time working was at January 2009, after that I came to the US for a 5 month period, and we decided to get married at the end of that. He used to live in Missouri, and he works at Wal-Mart since I know him, he still does. In January 2010 we went to Colombia to get married with my family and friends, and then all 2010 I was dealing with the green card papers. I got the green card at the end of July of 2010. Meaning during all of that period of time I was not legally aloud to work so I didn't. I keep on doing art, but just for my own interest, I got in a small contest in KC and got to exhibit one piece. It was very difficult for me to begin from zero, because it was super expensive to bring all of my pieces, so I left them there in Bogotá.
After I got the green card I tried to look for a job in Missouri first in my field photography, graphic design, art, etc. But never got a reply. By that time we were selling the house were we used to live, and we always new we were going to move out of the state wanting to be in a warmer place. So the effort to get a job for just a few months wasn't the greatest. I dedicated that time to make a webpage with my portfolio: http://www.minkstereo.com
I went to Colombia at December 2010 and came back at the end of January, I wanted to bring some of my art pieces what ever the circumstances so that I would be able to show an available portfolio at least. When I came back the house was sold and we moved to Savannah, GA at the beginning of February. I got a surprise when trying to apply to any art job over here, as all the posts are directed to SCAD students or graduates. Upsss SCAD is a great Art and Design University that took over the city, and in concern of art everyone wants something that comes from there. So I keep on doing my art but I still need a job, and seriously I've sent more than 50 resumes, no longer for art. I've filled in all of GAP, Target, Macy's, Michael's, AC Moore, Forever 21, etc Applications and they always reply with "We have carefully reviewed your skills and qualifications. Unfortunately, we do not have an appropriate position that matches your experience". And am sure this is an automatic mail, that everyone rejected receives.
I wish someone would tell me exactly why they are not hiring me. I believe is because all of my experience and studies are from Colombia. I don't know why in the world I am not fit to do jobs that require NO EXPERIENCE, when I establish that I am willing to begin from the lowest position. I have a bachelor of Arts and I speak fluently two languages. Where and how should I get experience and references in this country, if no one gives me the chance even for interviewing me? Is it because I am Colombian and I proudly say it? Should I keep myself from saying I am hispanic?
-
ANSWER:
Unfortunately, it already appears you know why you're not getting the jobs you're applying for. You are over qualified. That and the fact that all your studies and work have been done in Columbia. Potential employers won't take the time to check your references and they most likely see no need to, as you have more experience than they are willing to pay for. The job market is terrible right now. The jobs available seem to be only for a person with specialized skills or for people with no skills whatsoever. My advise: Keep trying. Perhaps try looking for local jobs on Craigslist? And look in your hometown local paper. Don't give up! It's hard not to be discouraged, but something is out there for you. Good Luck!!

QUESTION:
Jobs for a 16 year old girl, can't walk much?
I am 16 and this summer looking into getting a job / gig. The problem is that I am an active person, love to be outdoors / doing more physical stuff (I practically live at the barn, but I can't do work there because of my feet problem). I have a problem with my feet that makes it hurt to walk and I am getting surgery soon so I can walk a little bit but not very much and it hurts to stand up too long.
Some things about me:
I love art
Love animals (horses, dogs, cats, etc)
ok with kids but can't spend too much time w/ them without going crazy
cant stand sitting in a building all day, though i guess i would at last resort
don't really like clothing / fashionwhat are some good / unique / interesting job ideas? I was thinking of selling art but I am supposed to keep my art for my AP portfolio so that might be out.
ALSO is it too late to get a job since its already summer? I know a lot of people my age are looking for a job and many cant find one...
thanks
PS I dont have any real experience or resumes or anything, and I DONT want any kind of internet thing because its probably a scam, i want REAL work for both money and experience.-
ANSWER:
Miso,Since you can not walk much because of the upcoming surgery I suggest you work online and from home. Especially since you may not be moving much once you get the surgery. It is not easy in the beginning to make lots of money but within a month or two you should be making some decent money. I currently make 00 a month online. I know it does not seem like much but I only do it a couple hours a day if that. I am taking summer classes and I work a job so 00 a month extra is not too bad. My blog lists and explains ways to make money online that are entirely free. Here it is

QUESTION:
Am I in the legal right about my photos of children?
My brother goes to a private school so I'm allowed on the property.
I took pictures of the children who go to the school playing on the playground after school while they were in informal day care. The day care people didn't stop me.
I posted the pictures on facebook, and my mom freaked out and told me to take them down.I don't think I should have to take them down, they are my photograhy, my pieces of art, don't I own the copyright?
I think the school was acting as a parent and they didn't stop me, is that consent?
It was noncommercial, for my own personal portfolio, and the kids were not named. I live in Oregon, USA.
Am I in the legal right to keep them up?
*Someone told me this, are they correct?*
This was on private property. If you are given permission to enter the property and you take pictures then you are fine.
If they told you to stop taking pictures then you have to or you would have been committing trespass. The pictures you take are yours and yours alone.
Even if asked to stop or even leave the premises, those pictures which you have already taken are yours and the owners cannot force you to delete them or stop you publishing them.It does not matter whether or not the subjects are children or adults, you are allowed to publish and display these pictures and you DO NOT need a model release for non-commercial purposes. So publishing on your web-site or on facebook would NOT require a release.
If you were to try and use the pictures for advertising a product or the like then that is different and in the US specifically a model release would be required.
The problem these days is with kids.
People have the (very much mistaken) idea that it is against the law to take pictures of kids without permission and more specifically that it is an offence to publish them. IT IS NOT, the law is the same for kids as for adults.
However, to save a lot of grief with parents and to an extent over-zealous authorities, it is always best to get permission of the parents before posting any pictures of kids.
ONLY ANSWER IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUTI DON'T WANT YOU OPINION
-
ANSWER:
Forget the law do you know how many pedophiles or other creeps would like to come across those photos. It is a safety issue so stop thinking of your legal rights. Sorry that sort of an opinion now wasn't it.

It was noncommercial, for my own personal portfolio, and the kids were not named.
Am I in the legal right to keep them up?
-
ANSWER:
Some of this does depend on the country but in general things are the same for US and UK except when it comes to commercial usage.
Also, in the US some states have a privacy law but not all and this would not really fall under that anyway.
In the UK, even for commercial purposes, a model release is not required by law. The only comeback a person may have is if the pictures were libelous or held them up to ridicule. The problem these days is with kids.
People have the (very much mistaken) idea that it is against the law to take pictures of kids without permission and more specifically that it is an offence to publish them. IT IS NOT, the law is the same for kids as for adults.
However, to save a lot of grief with parents and to an extent over-zealous authorities, it is always best to get permission of the parents before posting any pictures of kids.So in summary, legally, you can keep them up.
It may however be worth your while checking with the parents concerned if they mind and if they do then remove them to save future grief.

QUESTION:
Do I have a good chance of getting into Cornell or Brown?
I am a currently junior in high school and by the beginning of my Senior year, hopefully,i will have:
a 4.0 GPA
taken only one non- honors class
taken roughly 7 AP classes ,with a 2 on my AP Euro
Taken almost every art class offered and constructed a portfolio
Taken 6 years of Latin, 2 years being college- level
have 6 years of science under my belt, including AP Chem and AP PhysicsI have not yet taken my SAT's, so my fingers are crossed there!!
I participated in WISE for 3 years which is like a science club that meets about every other week for 5 hours and we do experiments and college prep stuff. I also participated in ment-athletes for 2 years as well as the local Certamen for 2 years. I done have roughly 300 hours of community service, helping to teach art, music and theater to young kids.
I am not a sports person, and i really hope that it doesn't hurt my chances of getting into these schools.
what do you think??

ANSWER:
Cornell, yes. Brown--hard to say. Most applicants have the same grades. The community service might put you over the edge. Good luck!

QUESTION:
I am depressed what do I do (below is my sob story)?
I really don't know what to do anymore. I was always happy until after high school cause after that I started to worry whether or not I have future. The way the economy is, it's hard to get jobs and it seems like everything I want to be I can't be. First I wanted to be a something along the lines of a graphic designer but everyone says that there's no jobs around here. (I live in Ohio just so you know) Then I thought maybe an industrial designer but then I wanted to apply for the Cleveland Institute of Art and they wanted a portfolio of a bunch of stuff that I never do. I like to draw stuff I get off the internet. I'll find a picture and I can redraw it without tracing it and it looks really good but CIA said that drawings like that aren't good. So I ruled that out. Then I thought I like kids (I'm a kid at heart) and I always liked gym, why not be a gym teacher. Then my dad prints out a bunch of articles saying that teachers are being laid off and there's no jobs for teachers and my dad suggested accounting and he keeps pushing me towards that and I don't want to be an accountant. So I have no idea what I want to be. My interests are video games and drawing but video games get you no where and my drawing isn't that great but if you'd like to see some here's two links to my youtube videos. One is some posters I drew and the other is an action figure I made.
Poster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cs-FF4O5uU
Figure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAPc-X6f0Cs
This has made me so depressed that my grades have plummeted. In high school I was an A B student now at my community college I'm a C D student. I just graduated from my community college today with an Associate of Arts degree and my mom said, "Do you even deserve that degree?" and she's right I don't. So I feel like $h1t right now, I'm in my room, in tears, writing to you people. I don't have many friends, like I said my grades have dropped, I cry a lot and I'm seeing a shrink about all this but I don't think it's helping so I really don't know what to do, I feel like I have no future and I'm just going to be a hobo. I'm just a time bomb ticking and I feel like I'm running out of time and I'm only 19 years old! I just really needed to ventilate and explain my feelings. If anyone reads this, thanks for reading and listening to me. If you have any helpful suggestions please feel free to write them. Thanks again for listening.
Thanks everybody. I'm taking parts of each of your guys answers and really thinking. Yeah I'm only 19 and I shouldn't worry and maybe I should look into accounting despite it isn't something I want to do but maybe it'll get my foot in the door somewhere. I have not taken any career tests and I probably should. I took a career exploration class in college but it didn't really tell me what I wanted to do but I think I'll try a test, it couldn't hurt. Thanks again everyone for your help so far.
Thanks again evryone but it's over. My dad woke me up and he said my mom has been crying all night, they think they're failures and my dad agrees with my mom, I don't deserve the degree. Anyway my dad told me to look for a perminant job and I'm not college material. Computers and games are no longer aloud in this house so this will be my last time writing. Thanks for the answers so far and thanks for future answers. Goodbye.
Ok so my parents apologized and we're getting alone ok but I'm still pretty down. My parents let me have my laptop back and we are going to see my shrink this week. So hopefully everything will turn out ok and I might make a short for my figure although I have no idea where to start but I'll figure it out. Thanks again everyone.

QUESTION:
Lack of Ingenuity of The Pokemon series.?
I remember this game series got popular back when I was in High school. Despite being aimed at a young audience you have to admit that from a gaming perspective it was such a great idea: having your little critters that you must seek out in different biospheres, customizing them, training them, having the "trophies" of filling up a encyclopedia, and so on.I wished the game concept would be applied to a more mature theme. And when Persona came out by Atlus, where you existed in the demon world and raised demons, it seemed like a dream come true. But that game had some depth issues of it's own, and didn't really add a whole lot of new concepts.
Now here we are ten years later. These Poke games are still being released and are blockbusters for kids. Yet the graphics still look like they are from the game boy era, and virtually nothing has changed.
So this developing company is making nothing but money, lots and lots and lots of money - and they don't invest any of that into R&D Development?
Imagine a "training simulation" that has the graphics of Bioshock or Crysis, artificially intelligence, and various other triple AAA attributes, all the while aiming the theme at the average game playing audience. It would be a certain win.
And yet they don't - because they don't need too.
It's beyond lazy. Actually kind of offensive.
The problem with boycotts? The only people who participate are those who didn't like the product to begin with.
I just finished my BA in Game Art & Design. Still got some portfolio work to do, and I'm not saying this is the idea I would run with but, I wish something would be done about some of these big gaping holes being left behind by the major markets. The Indy revolution that was supposed to save the scene, never really came.
It just left us with a bunch of f$#cking puzzle games and Minecraft clones. Kind of depressing actually.
Haha... while trying to post this the top suggested category was "Society & Culture > Cultures & Groups > Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered",
screw you Yahoo Answers. Can't I say the word "Pokemon" without being stereotyped?! ?! ?!
-
ANSWER:
I disagree almost completely. I have never owned a Pokemon game, although my kids used to love them.If the formula is still selling millions to kids, there is no business reason to update the concept. Younger kids "need" simpler game play and easy to follow storylines. Kids are comforted by the familiar and still flock to the Pokemon series.
Nintendo tried to update the Pokemon franchise at least once, when they created the Pokemon Snaphot game and a Pokemon arena game. The idea of riding around on a train trying to capture the best "pictures" of a pokemon was a real loser, and the arena game was repetitive and dull.
Kids grow out of Pokemon. Older kids are playing First person shooters or "Portal", and that's OK. If those kids wanted a cartoon-type collect-em game, there would be one.
If you want to design one, go for it.
