    I want your ideas. I'm currently using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and I can make GUI's. Well I'm a beginner and have only had classes at school.       What's been fun and challenging? Teaming up with my buddy to create a highly interactive, complex gaming website. Basically you have to ask yourself what you like and where your interests lie. I myself was a part of a striving gaming community that eventually failed, so I tried to create a new one. If you're into basketball, for instance, you could then try to make a site based on that, like a bracket manager for playoff season, or something like that. Use your own creativity ;)

      PS: Get in the habit of writing good code. Make sure to learn and follow the rules of XHTML and use CSS as much as possible. Try to make your websites user-friendly: take advantage of javascript and AJAX. Read up on Web 2.0--it's the future of the internet.

    Presenting an online portfolio using PS slideshow template?
    Hi there.

    I'm applying for a digital media course and as part of the application process, I need to present a portfolio of my existing work both in soft and hard copy. I've got a great hard copy version which showcases my Photoshop & Photography work very well, however when it comes to online, I currently just use a slideshow created in Photoshop. The slideshow has a nice a nice clean and modern look, but is obviously templated - or at least it's obvious if you know PS :)

    Two of the aims of the course are to learn web design and Flash (amongst many other things) so I doubt they'd expect the most amazing digital portfolio ever, however my question is whether you think this PS created slideshow is good enough, or would it look more impressive if I created something in Flash, even if it didn't look as streamlined as the templated PS version?

    Edited to add: From what I can tell, the portfolio is essentially to prove I have a background in digital arts.

      I would present my work in such a manner that allowed the reviewer to focus on the work you've done, what kind of artist you are, what your conceptual frame works are, and so on. Most portfolio reviewers will favor one that clearly and cleanly showcases your work, not some imposed "style." If learning Flash and forcing your portfolio onto that program will detract from the work presented...then I would stick with what you've got.

      You said it yourself, the point of the course is learn Flash and web design, while the purpose of the portfolio is to show, in the clearest way possible, how you see yourself and your work as an artist.

      Lightroom has a few built in, but for me I just do it my self, you don't need much experience with flash or HTML and most of the code can just be lifted from other sources.

      "Best" is subjective. Domain names and hosting for it is not free. You have to pay or put up with the sub-domains and limitations of free sites.

    I found a template online that can track all the trades you make, total buy, total sell, profit, value, annualized return, and etc, but it doesn't track how much cash you have, add, or withdraw.

      Add cash as a separate account/investment. Then it's a transfer between two different accounts/investments.

      If you can edit the spreadsheet, add another tab and get it to work how you want it. The cash part should be very easy to do.

      If neither of those two options works, get a checkbook template and track your cash separately.

      If you are truly interested in tracking all of this information, use a quicken product. I have quicken premiere to track my finances and investments. It's well worth the investment when I have to prepare my tax return at the end of each year.

      I don't recommend free hosting. it's very unreliable, you don't have your own address, like www.something.com or www.something.in and it looks very amateurish to anyone who visits your site.

      If you're from India I recommend http://www.hosttell.com/one They are one of the leading European hosting companies, and they currently have a promotion in India. They are offering free hosting and a domain (I think you have to pay about €10 setup fee and that's it). Every plan includes Photo Gallery, WebEditor, Google Adwords coupon (so you can advertise your website on google for free) and a lot more. This way you will have a real website with a real domain name. Check them out.

      P.S. They are running this promotion in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and India so if you're from one of these countries you can get really cheap web hosting.

    If you visited a designer's online portfolio and they had used some stock images, either photographs, graphics or vectors, and applied appropriate copyrights to them, what would your professional opinion be of them if the rest of the portfolio was up to standards and the stock items were used in harmony with the design and the number of self-made content outweighed the amount of stock content?

    N.B. Stock content in this case does not include downloaded templates. Any templates will have been designed and created by the designer. Stock content applies to any photographs, decorative graphics or vectors that are used to enhance the design.
    Ok, let me explain:

    I am a digital designer, specialising in website design. I also deal with some print design. I am looking to redesign my portfolio and am looking for inspiration. It may be that, whilst looking on stock websites, I see some styles that I like and want to apply those styles to my own portfolio. If in order to achieve a certain style, I find a vector I would like to use, I would download and use the vector where I desired and say "This vector was designer by such and such a person and used under such and such a licence". When "applying appropriate copyrights", I probably should have said "copyright notices". Obviously, I am aware that I can't apply my own copyrights to images owned by someone else, I should have made that clear that I place a notice on my page saying I do not own that particular image.

      In my personal opinion, you shouldn't need stock images to create a professionally designed website. I have seen many websites that look very good with nothing but text. My Graphics Designer teacher emphasized font and use of white space. I believe these are very important concepts for a professional designer.

      A successful website in my opinion includes something that is very readable and easy to navigate. I have seen a lot of websites that are too flashy. They look very nice, but they fail at what a website is meant to do. Overuse of images seems to me like the designer is filling an area just to fill the area. That should not be the case. Every piece of the website should be to enhance the website overall. There is no point in slapping an image in the middle of the page that the user has to needlessly naviagate around.

      If you were to use stock images, I would use them at a bare minimum. Maybe a small little logo for the company or a small product image. Also, there are a lot of free stock images that you can use on the web if you search for them.

    What's the easiest way to make an art portfolio with Flash?
    I'm skilled with Photoshop and Illustrator, but I don't have a clue on how to use Flash. I want to create a portfolio to post online, and I want it to be dynamic and uncluttered in a way that can only be achieved with Flash. I know there are a bunch of tutorials out there, but they seem to be adding a lot of bells and whistles i'm not really in need of.
    I'm a total Flash noob, but does anyone know of a place where I can just get the template for a portfolio and I can just insert images of my work? or do I need to start from the ground up?
    Ideally, I'd like to be able to have some thumbnails on the site, and when someone clicks on it, it fills the screen and the person can click "next" to browse.

    Photo Shoot Contract?
    Okay so im doing a photo shoot with a 17 year old female model. there will be another 17 year old female there helping as my assistant. (im 17 also btw) but I need help writing a contract that I can re-use. I do not have a business license, so Im kinds just practicing. and the people who are modeling are getting free photos out of the deal.

      It does not matter a jot what you write as neither you nor the models can sign it anyway as you are all under 18 and it would constitute a contract.

      Your and their parents or guardians would have to be the signatories.

      Google "model releases" for some examples of what you may require though.

      The design is Ok but I am not a fan of the 3d flash gallery on the homepage. I think a j-query slider would be more suited. Look for a joomla plugin for this.

    Hi all

    I'm 24 and from the UK, I'm looking about working abroad for a bit with the possibility of making a permanent move if I enjoy it enough. I was wondering what is the best way to apply for jobs, I want to make sure I have something to walk into when I get there. I'm a carpenter by trade and have completed a 3yr advanced modern apprenticeship, I've also made an online portfolio showing examples of my best work, qualifications, skills and experience. Ideally I'd like to land a job in the construction industry, but if it was something else I'm not fussed, I don't even care if it means starting out as a labourer again and then working my way back up the ladder.

    Is it best to e-mail companies or write and send a letter? Can you get template letters for this kind of thing?

      You need a visa in the hand before any employer in Australia will look at you. Reality is you have to be here to get the job not "I will be flying over soon". On a WHV you are only able to be employed for 6 months per employer so you are not a real attractive employee in the industry unless they are nearing the end of the contract and need someone right now. To get that 2nd year you have to do - mostly farm work - for 3 months.

      You really need to discuss this with a lawyer who's familiar with model release documents so you will have a legally binding document that will hold up in a court of law if it needs to.

      Y!A tends to attract a lot of youngsters who are pre-professional if not-pre-graduation day. I suggest you place a call to artists on your local Craig's List or other widely publicized forums where artists and web designers might look for work. I search calls every now and then to see if what I do would be what others are looking for. . . .and it can pay off!

      What you are looking for, though, is a good web designer. I suggest you post this question in the computer category for better exposure . . .and find some computer forums online for possible leads.

    You should select just one design template and stay with that design template throughout the presentation. Once finished, you should have:

    Slide # 1 - Title slide

    Slide # 2 - Overview or Agenda slide

    Slide #'s 3-5 Your 3-5 elements of your portfolio

    Slide # 6 Which assignment would you select from this class to present to the interviewer and why?

    Slide # 7 Summary or Closing Slide

    Slide # 8 References slide

    Be sure to include your in-text citations and at least two references on the references slide in correct APA format. Also, be sure to include a varied slide layout (refer to PowerPoint chat for any questions on this), visuals such as clip art, photos or media clips and your speakers notes in the notes section (also covered on the PowerPoint chat).

    HELP! Should I still keep Experience in my resume even if its not relevant to the job?
    im trying to do my resume for graphic design jobs and my experience is teaching kids soccer. I have an associates in graphic design but i think the portfolio is more important. I dont find the experience relevant but should i still put that section? When i did an online resume builder and selected an undergraduate resume template and it doesnt include experience. Please help! what is your recommendation???
    im still working on my 3D animation bachelors and included that in my resume that i am graduating next november

    • ANSWER:
      What the soccer teaching shows employers is that you've had a leadership role, and that you're able to be trusted re: work - you'll do what you say you'll do. That's good. So include the soccer info.

      But put the experience toward the bottom of your resume. Your education stuff goes up top right now, because you're in college/graduating.
