For the self portrait photography, you need a digital camera, suitable background, tripod if needed. If you want to earn from your photography then you must have a photography portfolio website so that you can showcase your creative side to the world. Let us see few tips that would help you to improve and enhance your photos which you can click by yourself by using any camera which you have.
Preparing for the self portrait
A bit of the preparation is required when you need the best shots. Even in the magazine also, the fabulous shots have been prepared well with all the perfection. So if you wish to appear like a model, then you should approach your shoot in the same manner.
Location of the shoot For the official photo you must have a plain background, it might be gray, cream or white. The informal shot may give you the natural background, as this photo shot is simply about you so just avoid the distracting backgrounds. So you can just choose the plain wall. If you wish to take the pictures in the background, than keep the simple background.
Leaves and flowers are fine, but simply avoid too many colors otherwise people would not look at your picture only see the background. For the indoors you can use curtains as a background. Also bright colors would work lovely for the background. Although, best color of the background would be the one which goes perfect with the skin tone. For example, which color makes you look better, shades of blue, black etc.
The long arm
If you have long arms than you can just simply hold the camera as far it is possible from you, keep on smiling and keep pressing the shutter. You can also just place the camera above than you and you keep looking up, this also gives the nicer shot.
Click and move along
Most of the cameras have got the timers option nowadays, so you can use that option in your camera. So here you would not be holding the camera at the time of taking the picture so either you require a steady place like table or shelf and the better option here would be to use tripod.

QUESTION:
Photography portfolio website: Is it better to use a dark or light background?
Hello all,I've been tinkering around with my portfolio site for a bit and am undecided on whether to go for a dark or light background.
I know that photos often look well on a dark background but I found that my dark grey site seemed a bit oppressive and dull, that and it is not great reading white text on a dark background.
Still not sure what to do though. I would appreciate your opinions and experiences.
Do you prefer viewing photos on a dark or bright background?
Here is my site with a bright background. I want to keep it really simple and uncluttered in order to not distract from the images.
http://www.barryocarrollphotography.com/
Do you think the bright background works?
Any other feedback welcome.
Thank you in advance.
-
ANSWER:
You're site looks fine, and I agree that dark grey would be oppressive. White is fresh, clean and lets the images speak for themselves.

QUESTION:
I need some advice on creating an online photography portfolio/website?
Creating a design that accomidates for both vertical and horizontal orientations is proving difficult, which may seem odd, but your gonna have to trust me, things would work and look a lot better if they were all the same size and shape. My question is, would it be obscene to recrop the photos so that all are the same dimensions, for example, square? Should a portfolio display the photos precicely as they exist, or can it display the work in a pleasing and informative matter, still faithfully representing the work though not an exact depiction?Any photographers or designers out there have any opinions?
-
ANSWER:
Ok you want to crop your images so they are all the same size? Sure do it if they arent very good it doesn't matter. If they are good compositions why would you want to crop them? It doesnt make sence to crop them, unless the compositions don't matter.

QUESTION:
How to make a Photography Website/Portfolio?
I am an aspiring Photographer, and I would like to make a website that could act as an online portfolio for people to browse. I do not want it to look sloppy, and I do not want a blog style site. I am looking to make something that follows the layout of this website:http://www.johnmorrisphoto.com/

ANSWER:
Hi Pokemon Master
I suggest that you use a hosted solution directed to photography websites. With an hosted solution you don't need to have a server and mess with geek stuff. It's simple, more effective and gets you more clients in the long run. Examples of hosted solutions for photographers are:
http://buzzrain.com
http://www.qufoto.com/
http://www.photoshelter.com/Hosting your website is cheaper but you lose much more time. And remember, your time is much more valuable when your working on your photography not your website.
I also I suggest that you learn web marketing including SEO techniques. SEO in particular, is totally worth your time because it's easy to learn and use and it's the marketing technique with the highest ROI.
Finally, don't make these mistakes with your photography website:

QUESTION:
Want to make a personal portfolio website. NO idea what to do. Need Help/Advice!!?
I am a recent college graduate. I would like to make a website for my photography portfolio. I currently have a basic blog for it, but it seems a bit unprofessional to send it with my resume to possible future employers. I consider myself pretty good with technology and computers, but I cannot seem to grasp this whole website thing. Blogs, no problem. But I've been researching how to create a REAL website and I just keep getting frustrated and confused.I have bought a domain name from GoDaddy.com. I understand that I need a hosting website...where do I even begin to pick one of these?! And I've heard a lot about WordPress...anyone know anything about this?!
I really need someone to break the whole process down for me. I know a lot of you out there think its super simple, but I just cannot seem to get it! I really want a clean, professional portfolio website that is just simple to maintain. And as a recent graduate, I am even more poor than I was while I was IN school so I really need something as cheap as it gets.
Any suggestions/advice/HELP for me?
I'd really appreciate it..I've made SEVERAL attempts at this website thing and it just leaves me frustrated and unmotivated.
Any pros out there that can lay it all out for me in laymen's terms? THANK YOU

Best FREE website to advertise my photography on? Apart from deviantart, Flickr etc?
I mean a proper portfolio website that might get me some attention?-

The website will not get you attention, you have to create that for yourself. Redbubble is good, but there are hundreds of people a week putting up a new photo stream. Just because you put up a stream, the world is not going to be rushing to see it.Yu can also find free hosting, and build a website yourself, then it becomes a matter of your SEO skills to create your own attention, rather than relying on someone else's website design.

Which website builder site would make a good PORTFOLIO site?
Hi, I would like to make a photography / retouching website, here's a good example -http://www.briandilg.com/imaging/

one without it, but where your work can look GOOD?Thankyou!

ANSWER:
It's NOT the so-called "web site" builder" that does it. It is the person using it. You need to know how to properly code your design items, as well as, make the graphics if need be. Learn CSS and HTML properly and you have the basics to start Image changes on mouseovers depends on scripting language. Learn that, too, or use ready made code.Any web editor worth being called a web editor will allow the functionality for what you want.

QUESTION:
How should I protect my photos on the web?
I have a photography portfolio website, and am really looking for a better way to protect my pictures. Right now, users can just copy and paste them onto their computer. I have added watermarks to some of my photos, but that takes too long for my vast number of pictures. Any alternatives?Thank you!
EDITI have made my website with Apple's iWeb.
-
ANSWER:
The number one protection if you live in the USA - register all your photos with the US Copyright Office. This gives you the right to recover not just lost sales income, but also punitive damages and legal fees for any successful copyright infringement action. You can automate application of watermarks in Photoshop so it gets done while you sleep or are away from your computer.
The next best thing is to use software such as Adobe ImageReady (or Photoshop, which is harder but will do) to reduce the color palette and resolution so that the photos look OK on the web but print and scale poorly because of the limited number of colors and limited resolution. This makes your photos less attractive to someone looking to steal images.
As for preventing copying in the first place, you can't. I can easily get past any 'right click' protection I have ever seen. (Not that I would, I'm a photographer and also concerned about image theft, that's why I check to see if protection actually works.) If it displays, I and nearly anyone else can grab it.

ANSWER:
I'm afraid i can't give you a specific technical answer, but what flickr.com does, and this is purely a back-end server solution just to give you an idea.Is that when people go to right-click and save, it gives them a dummy file, i think it's spaceball.gif -
A lot of image serving or big ISPs also provide this service - it redirects the request.
But honestly, there's no sure-proof way to protect it, the best thing you can do is 1) watermark 2) not provide full hi-res images online.
If you provide web-quality images, well you can't stop someone from doing a print-screen and pasting it into photoshop for example, but you can limit the quality they get.

photography website hints?
Hello,
I want to create a website portfolio for my pictures.
I have seen other people's websites and some of them are quite amusing.
I have written many websites but none of them was with the purpose of a portfolio (mostly php, javascript and ajax based).
It has been few years I dont make one so now I am asking for hints. What should I use for the creation? Flash based? Or should I use something like joomla and work with that? Something else?
I do not like the flash option simply for the fact that they usually are very slow.
But any advice is accepted
Thanks,
PS. Be specific and try to use complete names when quoted please.

I've used joomla recently to create 2 online portfolio website for photographers... the better one of the 2 is http://www.candbphotography.com it's mainly content for services etc, but there are image galleries linked to each section that automatically generates the layout, all the updated has to do is upload images into a folder and everything else is handled by joomla.Loads of various image gallery / portfolio components out there available either as paid for or free so i don't think you would be stuck for choice. But joomla is a pretty good solution

Hi! I set up my photography portfolio on Zenfolio.com and have been sending it clients, but a few people have said that they can't see my pictures because they have Java disabled. How can I change it so the photos are viewable to people who have Java disabled?? This is a huge problem considering that my photos are my business and if people can't view them, I have no business! Please someone help me out with this, Thanks! 10 PTS!

ANSWER:
You can't turn off people's JavaScript in their browsers. You need to set up the JS noscript tags instructing them they have JS turned off. Either that or use something that doesn't use JavaScript to display your photos.Maybe use flash or a video type format.

-Sussurrare Photography (means 'whisper')
-Ti amo sempre (means 'love you always')

QUESTION:
What's in a good photography portfolio?
Back in high school, I did photo 1-4 and advanced studies at the community college, as well as frequently helping out a local professional photographer. I was all set to study photography in college, but I met my husband a few weeks before I graduated high school, and never ended up going to college at all. At the time, it was right on the brink of when digital was surpassing traditional photography, and since I didn't have room in our first apartment to set up a darkroom, nor the money to get into a digital setup, I just let photography go for a while, so I could pick it back up when we were in a better financial situation, and I could get the equiptment I needed. I have continued helping out the same photographer I did in high school over the years, and have gained invaluable knowledge of working with digital and doing all different types of photography. Last Christmas, my husband bought one of his old backup cameras for me (a Canon 20D, that had only been used a few times). Thankfully, most of the equiptment I had in high school doing traditional photography works with the new camera, so I have a good, semi-professional setup, albeit a bit outdated equiptment due to financial restrictions. I have had no problems finding clients who can't afford a professional photographer, and am now regularly doing product photography for 5 small businesses websites, and odd jobs here and there (I only charge an hour, which makes it affordable). Recently, a lady wanting a outdoor family portrait (a customer of one of the businesses I do photos for) asked to see my portfolio. I told her the truth, I haven't ever gotten around to assembling one.Seeing as I'm finding myself doing more and more work as the word spreads about my affordable rates and eye for lighting, I really do need something to show people that I do actually know I'm doing. Right now, all my best shots are on my computer and haven't even been printed. I see no need at this point for a website, I just want a portfolio I can carry with me. While I haven't had a camera until recently, I have still been using my photographer friends cameras, and have images ranging from studio/product work, architecture, sports, portraits, pets, wildlife, landscapes, "experimental/abstract", you name it, I've done it and have some phenomenal shots. My main focus is on product/studio work, but I also want to highlight my eye for lighting (lighting is my biggest strength in photography, be it in a studio or natural) and to have a well rounded portfolio. My SIL gave me a blank scrapbook that holds 20 8x10 photos, has a durable hard cover, and seems pretty excellent for keeping my portfolio in. I guess I'm really looking for tips on what to put in a good, well rounded portfolio?

ANSWER:
You can include some of your best photos in it. If you make different styles, you can separate them into chapters. You can put words among them. And you can make also a digital portofolio
