     Simply search for "portfolio" at google or yahoo. You will see a lot of examples. Generally, portfolio should have about 10-15 pieces of your best work, preferably recent. It is good to have a piece to represent each category in which you have skills.
     Paper portfolio is like a scrapbook - and you get help in any art supply shop in your area.
     As for examples, I am still working on mine (wink wink) and you can see it at http://www.mageedesign.com/portfolio.htm but as long as you put the "Portfolio" search term in, then you should find plenty exampless.

   How do I develop a compelling Web Design portfolio from scratch? Or do I get a job to get the portfolio going?
   I am a recent college graduate with a major in internet web design. I consider myself an intermediate level developer, but I just don't know where to start with a portfolio! Every time I apply for a job, I get kicked to the curb by more advanced people with great portfolios. And how do I get one going if I don't have one in the first place? Suggestions?

   • ANSWER:
     Try doing some pro bono work for some organizations around your local community. They'll be a pain to get through, but a good way to get your portfolio going. Same with family and friends or market to small local businesses. You could also create websites for yourself about things you like and/or hobbies.

   How do I make a web design portfolio?
   I'm planning on attending a job fair at my college to look for Web design interships. I want to bring a portfolio along with my resume but I don't want to lug my laptop around. What should I do? Should I make an online portfolio for this occassion and supply them a link or print out screen shots/pictures of the work I've done on quality photo paper and arrange a portfolio that way?

   • ANSWER:
     The people interviewing you probably don't want to be forced to look at your work, so you are right that bringing along your laptop is a bad idea.

     I don't think carrying a formal portfolio with you is a good idea. It's a bit pushy. I would hand them a few examples of your work on good quality paper (not photo paper, it's too bulky). If they seem interested you can then offer to show them some other work.

     What you do take depends largely on how well written your present work is. For instance, if you have coded directly in HTML, CSS and javascript then I would put examples of your work on a CD and hand it to them at the interview. Make sure that all your code validates and tell them that.

     However, if you have used programs like FrontPage I would avoid letting them see your source code. Such programs create horrible code.

   Could anyone offer me advice on how to create and build a web design portfolio to attract potential employers? For example, i am competent with the Adobe suite/HTML/E-Commerce etc-so was thinking of designing 2-3 sites with just one page showing my design skills, 2-3 more interactive websites (e.g. 3-5 pages) and an E-Commerce site. 8. QUESTION:
   How to showcase my portfolio, sell web design services and hosting?
   I´d like to put up a website to showcase my portfolio in design and programming, but I would also like to use the site to sell my skills and design and host web sites for customers. Does that make me a reseller? Is host reselling the option I should look for?
   I would appreciate recommendations for which provider to sign up with, I need to publish sites using anything from Drupal to flat file html.

   • ANSWER:
     That depends.

     Reseller account: Get this if your clients want access to their own control panel, have their own set of settings, and do this kind of stuff themselves.

     Regular account: If your clients are mostly small business owners who aren't technically inclined, you'll probably be the one to do maintenance for them. In this case you won't need a reseller account. A regular account would be better since it's more affordable.

     I recommend http://webspacehq.net/ -- they offer both regular and reseller accounts. You get unlimited add-on domains, so even if you choose a regular account, you could add and configure your clients' domains very easily for no extra charge.

9. QUESTION:
   Whats the best way to get people to view my online portfolio? web traffic?

   I know about SEO but I am looking for other effective ways to get traffic.

   • ANSWER:
     There are three primary ways of getting traffic on the internet:

     1. Backwards Links (Back links)
     This is the process of getting other sites to link back to your site. The best links come from sites with high page rank and use the keywords that you are targeting with your website. You can build these manually or rely on others slowly finding you and linking to your page.

     2. Paid Advertising
     This is the process of buying advertising space on different sites and/or using pay per click (PPC) services from different places, particularly large search engines. It is fast, but if you are competing in high volume areas can become expensive quickly.

     3. Organic Ranking
     This is creating content and relying on people to find it, whether via search engines, forums, or creating articles, etc.

     For your site, I would recommend a combination of networking to get backward links pointing to your site and paid advertising.

     In the long run, a combination of organic ranking and building backwards links is normally the best approach, but your site has some fundamental flaws which would make doing so harder than it should be.

     1. Your domain name is not very good for organic ranking.
     It would be much better to do keyword research to find out the words that people are actually using when they seek out freelance designers and then getting a domain that had at least one or two of those words contained within it. If you really want to build your name up, something like richardreevefreelancedesigner.com would be a better choice.

     Fortunately, most hosts allow you to park domains on top of existing sites, so that multiple domain names point to the same site.

     2. Your site looks to be rather static.
     I would recommend adding a blog to it and posting semi regular examples of some of your designs. I would also recommend putting up examples of each type of item you note that you design, so that potential clients can preview your portfolio online.

     WordPress works great for such, and you could fit it in by installing it in a sub-directory ( perhaps /blog ) and creating a link from the main page to it.

     There are a wide variety of methods for getting more traffic, but not all of them are going to be very useful without a site designed to take advantage of them.

     If you really want to keep your site as it is, I'd recommend starting with:
     * Search engine submissions
     * Directory submissions
     * Creating Squidoo lenses and/or Hub Pages
     * Using twitter to talk about new designs
     * Tracking down designer forums on the internet and entering into conversation on topics which interest you.

     Personally, I'd get another domain, install a blog, and take advantage of RSS, feed aggregators, and article marketing as well.

    can I take pics from the local car show w/ no release for my web and portfolio?
    I need pictures from old cars, there is a car show in town. everyone takes pictures to the cars.. Do I still need to ask them permission to use the pics for my web and portfolio?

    I know normally I need the release, but I'm not sure when its a public show where public and media can take pictures freely.

    • ANSWER:
      It is not just selling. Any kind of promoting etc. will require a release. What is on your web? What kind of portfolio? At your level it is doubtful that anyone wold complain, but you might be right along the line of legality. It is always best if you can secure a release. If it is just cars? You will need a property type of release. if there are people in the shots? You will need model releases. If you get a simple release and ask tell each owner what your intentions are? it will make you safe. ..
      .....What if you take a GREAT unusual photo and enter it into a show? You would definitely need a release. It is like copying someone else's 'art'.
      .... Many Car shows are of customized cars that people have spent months or even years on... for you to snap a shot and enter it into a show? could cause problems. ..I have been a photographer for over 45 years, and getting a release is a real pain. By starting the habit NOW it will help you in the future when you do turn PRO> .. If you get used to always asking and getting some sort of release it makes it easier and just becomes part of your abilities as a photographer.

      I wouldn't use photobucket if it was me, it just seems a little unprofessional.

      I don't know your skills in web design, that might be your business it might not be, but I would say your best bet is create your own web based portfolio. Not only does it show off your work that you highlight, but also the dedication you have into making something the best it could be.

      I would rather hire someone who took the time to create their own web-based portfolio than someone who took ten minutes and threw their stuff up on photobucket. IMHO

    I'm using MSN Money but am having problems. Is there a web-based free portfolio tracker that is superior to MSN Money? I like the MSN Money ability to track multiple metrics but I'm having trouble getting the latest prices to be reflected in my portfolio.

      Morningstar has a pretty good one, and so does Vanguard. Don't you just hate entering all of that info in again, though?

      Both are free, though deviantart also offers premium paid services, you don't really need them.

      Ads really discourage you visitors because they are trying to look around your site while being bombarded with ads.

    What are good colors & text for a portfolio web site? do you have to do it the way you like it with glass shiny buttons & your favorite colors a different way with plain text & other kind of colors?

    • ANSWER:
      I would say the best colours would be popular ones. It means you would have to update the site regularly, but like it or not we all are drawn to those colours.
      Check out Fashion Designer web pages to get an idea what colours are in (Dior, Chanel, DKNY, etc) Another idea that I found was actually to look at craft sites. Scrapbooking ones are great for finding wonderful colour combinations (Close to My Heart, Stampin Up). So are Paint company sites, like Behr.
      Other than that, I would sugest soft neutrals with a couple bright accents for punch. Turquoise, Orange, Fuscia and Grass Green are great for the punch. I wouldn't suggest Red unless your designs are very modern or urban, and then only use a small ammount for accent. Otherwise it overwhelms and sometimes repulses.
      White is best for showing that your designs are clean, new and fresh. It illustrates attention to detail. If your designs are more tradition off-white is fine. My main area is Photo restoration so I use an antique white to give a vintage feel. But I use white for my CG's and layouts.
      Don't go overboard with fonts. I know we all love those cool ones you can download, but you want something a person can read. Arial, Times and Futura are all good for body text. But you can go all out for deco text as long as it is readable.
      Keep the buttons easy to see and readable. You don't have to make them glass, in fact I would stay away from that effect. Everyone uses it and you want to set yourself apart. Look online for tutorials on new effects. (I'll include a few of my fav sites)

      But basically the site has to reflect yourself and your work. Don't do a modern layout if your portfolio is full of classical designs. And don't use an austere classic design if your work is funky and urban. As for it being business or personal - that depends on why you are putting up the site, and what type of work you want to get. I prefer the casual-business look, it's professional while still being welcoming and warm. Tell your story.
      Search online and look at other peoples sites to get an idea what you like (but you know the drill, don't copy - create!).
      Good Luck. I've always wanted to set up a site but I am useless at web pages (but learning).

      getting the job portion might be a bit harder, you may have to start out as a intern first, or even at a different position.

      For new web design companies with limited portfolio. Here is a rule of thumb, if you don't have many website to showcase well then maybe you should start designing some for your self.       When I'm looking for employees I always look for the small things, like organised code, tabbed in the correct places, so that at a glance you can see what goes with what e.g.

      
      

      Also I look for people who comment their code, so no-one has to look through all the code to find out what it does.

      If you are going to an interview, I wouldn't suggest talking about how code works, as they will know and this will sound patronising to them.

      Most people aren't looking for people who can code, there are thousands, what they are usually looking for is someone who has flare, creativity and can think for themselves, but also work in a team.

    I would rather clean my house (toilets included) than to sit down and finish this thing, which I've been working on for months.       I do weddings and I am doing both ... I have a nice print portfolio for when I meet client with my best wedding pics and portraits and I'm currently building my website to showcase my work.

      My print portfolio is all done with 8.5X11 prints it has a huge impact when clients see these gorgeous prints and see the quality of the work at that size but some clients want to see some of your work before the first meeting so ...

      Try doing some pro bono work for churches, charities, etc...places that can't afford a high-paid web designer. While it doesn't put money in your pocket, you can do it while you are working elsewhere for a while and each job adds to your portfolio. Once you have a small number of these web sites up and running, you will have your portfolio and can go after the high paying jobs. Also, you never know who might belong or contribute to the church/charity - you may get jobs through word of mouth.

    I am designing a website to market my talents as a videographer, social media strategist, and pseudo-graphic designer. While I am leaning towards a simple and sleek design, am I making a mistake by not letting my design skills shine though with a flashier design?

      Flash and Java cannot be interpreted by Google. This means that if your entire site/imagery/content/information is embedded into Flash or Java, it will basically be invisible to the search engine's robots. If they don't have any content to scan and store into their index, then your website will never come up on Google when people do a search for the services/products you offer.

      yup.... it's a website about yourself demonstrating your skills, achievements... etc that will sale your self for employment... you can also include photos or sample of your work.

    Looking for a work and often need to send portfolio examples and I thought it would be better to make a slide show or movie of my portfolio that employers could log onto and I would not have to worry if I am sending it in the right format.

      Depending on your line of work, you can always choose between a static portfolio website, or something that moves ( with flash/animation ). I'd rather that you put up a website than a slideshow. A website can be more professional so take time making one. There are plenty of sites out there offering hosting, as well as hundreds of pre-designed templates if you're in a hurry.

    how to apply for web designer job w/o a portfolio?
    i'm currently working in an e-marketing solutions company. i've help create landing pages for one of the cell phone service providers by use of html and css. i also have used photoshop, imageready, javascript, and dreamweaver to create emails and other pages. i consider myself with a pretty solid knowledge of coding and with those applications.

    i've never taken a design course -- i've learned everything myself in the past and in my current job so i'm unsure of how a portfolio works. i recently found an open position stating qualifications for basic knowledge of all that i have, but i just don't have a portfolio. i wasn't sure if i could include the landing pages since i only do the html/css coding and others contribute to them with their back-end web development. how do i compile one, especially since there are other contributors to the work?

      Most employers don't care about html or css knowledge, they are only concerned with your graphics design ability, and your ability to throw a complete website together with dreamweaver in 2 or 3 hours. What you need are actual examples of websites you have created, preferably for previous clients. Perhaps you could create some?

    I am an architect. I prepared a portfolio about 104 pages. Pages' format are jpeg. I want to prepare a slide show. I used POWERPOINT and save it as a web page and than upload it a free web site.       Print up fliers (you can do that on your own computer - no need for Staples or Kinkos) offering a free website (design and development only) to local businesses that you think would benefit from a web presence. They pay for the domain name and hosting (they can buy or you can buy for them, but they do the financial deal with the host), you design, develop, upload the site and get it running. For free. In return for a tiny link down at the bottom to your site (or an email link to your email address). And you can use every site in your portfolio. Five to ten sites should be enough to get you started and unless you live in a small town, it should be easy to get that many business to go for free site design.

    I am a new person without a portfolio.

      Print up some business cards. Go door to door to local businesses, offering to develop a web site for them for free. (They pay for hosting - with any host they like - and a domain name if they decide to use what you develop.) Treat each one like a valued paying customer - free first consultation, contract, etc. Tell them it's like their giving away samples of their product on opening day - you need advertising, and if you can satisfy them it's good advertising for you. (Business people understand that concept.)

      After you do about 5 sites like that, you have a real, working-site, portfolio, and real satisfied customers. (You can buy advertising for money, but you can't buy a satisfied customer for any price - and that's your best advertising.)

    I want your ideas. I'm currently using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and I can make GUI's. Well I'm a beginner and have only had classes at school.       The easiest method would be to use a pre-built content management system. Because the website you describe sounds not too overly complex, and your friend probably needs a simple to use solution, have a look at CMS from scratch:

      Make sure that your site is simple and easy to navigate. Prospective clients appreciate a simple website where they can see what they need to see quickly as opposed to a highly graphical, flashy site where they have to search.

      Remember, you capture your visitor's attention, "hook" them, in the first paragraph. This includes prospective clients. You also want to make sure that the text on your website is SEO optimized so that it can be found in the search engines. This includes titles and text. Make sure that you have WORKING links to each area of your portfolio. I regularly receive contact from prospective clients from my site which is very simple. I have not even updated it recently, but I get plenty of calls and emails from people who want me to do work for them,

      This is a good start. Your site will evolve naturally as you evolve. If you do not have any published work, that is fine. Everyone has to start somewhere. Post your personal work and get published at sites such as:

      That cheap is too low, you can get way more than that. Just give them a satisfaction guarantee that if they don't like it they don't have to use it and they don't pay. If you are wanting to free-lance you gotta do sales so get used to it and don't go too under the going rate. Just give them some warranty that the experienced guys won't.

      You should put up a personal site first though. Show off everything you know how to do on it and be creative. You can make up some dummy sites too, and include them on yours to show your style. As a web developer, they will expect that you have a site.
